This week my thursday bug is:

Expired applesauce... man, I've never had stomach cramps like that.

tgif vs shit

When a businessman got on an elevator, there was a blonde already inside who greeted him with a bright, “T-G-I-F.”

He smiled at her and replied, “S-H-I-T.”

She looked puzzled and repeated, “T-G-I-F,” more slowly.

He again answered,”‘S-H-I-T.”

The blonde was trying to keep it friendly, so she smiled her biggest smile, and said as sweetly as possibly, “T-G-I-F.”

The man smiled back to her and once again said, “S-H-I- T.”

The exasperated blonde finally decided to explain.

“T-G-I-F means ‘Thank Goodness It’s Friday.’ Get it, duuhhh?”

The man answered, ”S-H-I-T means ‘Sorry, Honey, It’s Thursday.”

idol chatter...

It's Elton John night. And all I'm focused on is Ryan Seacrest's hair.

First up is Scotty. Thankfully he's playing guitar so I don't have to watch his hand shenanigans on the microphone. But he's still got the dog fart sniffing expression. Who knew Elton John wrote a country song? And why do I dislike Scotty so much?

Naima is putting a reggae twist on I'm Still Standing. oy What is she wearing??????

It's 8:30 and I'm already bored. This is going to be a very long night. I may just head to bed early and fast forward through the nonsense tomorrow.

Paul... Rocket Man? He's so unusual.

Pia has chosen the song that made Clay Aiken. It's hard to hear a woman sing Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me. And *shrug* she didn't kill it.

I'm still bored. Why am I watching? Steven Tyler's been too soft. Jennifer is trying to be constructive. Randy is trying to "keep it real". Too much talking not enough singing. I'm going to bed.

idol chatter...

I almost blew off Idol last night. It had been a pissy day and I was tired. I'm so glad I stayed up! What an exciting results show! I was shocked that Casey was in the bottom and even more stunned when they said he was the lowest vote getter. And then he started singing and the judges stopped him. Oy! But it was good news because the judges used their only save on him. He was shocked, I was shocked, the audience was shocked. It was great fun. And I'm so glad my favorite was saved. I guess I better start voting.

idol chatter...

Motown week. It's been interesting. Casey was a great way to start the show. Pia, Haley and Jacob were also great tonight. Scotty sang his countrified version of "For Once In My Life" and it made me cringe. A lot. I am not sure why this kid appeals to so many people. He's got some weird mannerisms with the microphone and he looks like he's sniffing dog farts when he sings. I didn't care for Lauren. And Stefano's song choice was... well, it was Lionel Richie, the only person who makes Lionel Richie sound good is Lionel Richie. Paul needs a comb, or is the bedhead thing really a go? Naima, Naima, Naima...must you wear costumes???? They distract from the performance. And then there's James. Really?

I hope the results show is interesting. Ryan had a lot of filler bits, it seems. Hope he didn't use up all his fun bits.

just finished reading...

The final installment of the Millennium Trilogy was not disappointing. The action was different in this book--more investigative than kick-butt. There were a couple of sub plots that didn't really add to the overall story, other than they fleshed out the characters.

As the series finale, it is satisfying. But the characters do not ride off into the sunset.

celebration day...

Today I took my very first personal day. I spent the day as a bit of a celebration of myself. I slept in, lounged around in my pajamas and took my time getting going. I read, I watched tv, I listened to some music. I had planned to Skype in to my book group to make our monthly meeting but just as I was getting ready to log on, my friend John called and I ended up going out to lunch! It was such a delightful lunch--the food was tasty and the conversation flowed--laughter and laughter and laughter. So today has been a celebration of me. The only flaw in the day is that my cable is out, and I'm almost out of dvr'd shows.

thursday bug

Sometimes it helps to share with others what bugs your mind.
They may have a solution, a kind word, or a smile of encouragement.
This week my thursday bug is:

Not being acknowledged by someone who used to be very important in my life.

the play's the thing...

It was a great night for theater. Opening nights sometimes have glitches but tonight was smooth. It was a hoity-toity event, too, with a cocktail hour at the University President's house before the show and a meet-n-greet after the show. Growing up in a theater family I still have no trouble getting lost in the acting. Most of the time I can suspend my relationship and enjoy the performance. My dad is incredibly gifted, as are my sisters. And they love being on stage. I love being in the audience. Or in the technical booth. Tonight's production was very good. I actually want to see it again.

Here's a great article about John, the playwright.

You Are Open

You have great people skills and tend to be extremely popular with everyone you know.

You are modest and humble. You like to be the center of attention, but you don't show off.

You live in the present moment. You try to enjoy whatever is going on and refrain from complaining.

You rely on your friends and family for support. You can be lonely when there's no one else around.

Very excited to see John's play in a local production tomorrow night. John's in it, too! I suppose I should mention that my stepmother is directing, my sister and father are both in it.

3.15.2011

ten things tuesday...

Ten random things:

1) Annual observation day was yesterday. I had no warning and it is the class that is packed with the most difficult kids.

2) Tomorrow we have a Holocaust survivor speaking. The students are excited to hear him. So am I. I've explained to them that they are the last generation to be able to experience their stories first hand. It makes me sad. It makes me feel old.

3) I have a new neighbor (again). She is very nice and quiet, so far.

4) I have been unusually hungry all day today. What's up with that? I'm too old for a growth spurt.

5) Any iPad app suggestions? I have Scrabble and Angry Birds and I don't need anymore games.

6) I actually have a couple of things on my social agenda this week. An after-school gathering on Thursday and a play Thursday night. And I've taken Friday off as a personal day so I can lounge around and have a nice day.

7) My sister (the recent birthday girl) asked me to tend her Farmville Farm during lent. I didn't realize how pressured I'd feel.

8) Speaking of Lent, I'm doing quite well with the "no shopping" pledge. But it is a challenge.

9) I really don't like it when students friend request me on Facebook.

10) I woke up with a headache. It's still sort of there.

a sign of spring

i am a shopaholic...

So, I'm not known for being a terribly religious person. But I can't resist a challenge. Usually I "give up" sex for Lent. But this year I thought I would make a sacrifice, for real. I am giving up shopping. Oh, I'll still get groceries and household necessities, but I won't buy anything else. And I've already tried to figure out how a Nook book would fit in to the necessity category but I didn't buy it. I even got a phone call telling me about a Friends & Family sale at my favorite clothing store happening next weekend. I got a bit shivery but... I will resist. I'm hoping to break my shopping habit. Because I think it is a habit. One I can stand to break.

are you a mirror or a window?

You Are a Window

You are a truly extroverted person. Your life feels empty without lots of people in it.

Being around others makes you feel joyful. Friends and family bring meaning to your life.

And even if you're all alone, you prefer to be people watching out in public.

You are a cheerful and eager participant in the world. You are full of delight and wonder.

saturday 9

St. Patrick's Day

1. St. Patrick's Day is March 17th (Thursday). Do you celebrate and wear green? Drink Green Beer? Ignore it? I wear green but I don't drink green beer. I also tell a lot of corny jokes to my students.

2. If a leprechaun told you that you could have any amount of money from his pot of gold but it had to be a specified amount for a specified item, how much would you ask for and what would it be for? I would ask for enough that an interior designer could come in and make my place razzle dazzle

3. One of the symbols of St. Patrick's Day is the leprechaun. Name a celebrity that you think would look good as a leprechaun. Name a celebrity that would look ridiculous as a leprechaun. Is there any one celebrity that would make a really scary leprechaun? Jeremy Piven would be a cute leprechaun and John Goodman would be ridiculous. Chuck Norris would be a scary leprechaun. (I couldn't resist)

4. For a prize of $1,000,000,000 you are challenged to make yourself a costume for a St. Patricks Day party. The ONLY rules are that you aren't allow to use clothing and it has to be green. Using anything other than clothing, describe your costume to us using ANYTHING else in the house. I have some kelly green sheets that would make a fetching ensemble in a sarong/toga draped fashion

5. What day of the week is your busiest? Tell us about your schedule. Mondays are pretty busy because I try to get the whole week organized and catch up on any loose ends from Friday. Some Mondays I do all my photocopying for the week and that takes some time. Plus we have faculty meetings on Mondays, so there would be an added meeting in the day.

6. No matter what's going on in your life, what always makes you smile? a hug

7. Of all the clothes you own, what do you feel most comfortable wearing, and why? oh, anything I own is comfy

8. On what television show—either past or present—would you like to make to make a guest appearance, and what role would you play? I would have loved being on Seinfeld. Or Friends.

9. What else is on your mind? Go ahead and rant. I don't really have anything on my mind. For once.

desperate need...

If you are able to donate, it would help. Network for Good offers a lot of opportunities.

finished reading...

I read this as a college freshman more than twenty years ago. I was anxious to see how I responded to the novel after all this time. The story is of salvation and redemption in the two main characters, medieval men: one quietly content with his religion and monastic life, the other in fervent search of more worldly salvation. It is the ultimate story of head versus heart. I think I felt more sympathy for the characters in this go around.

It was a great choice for my book group. We'll have a lot to talk about.

idol chatter...

I was more impressed with the boys than the girls last night. I especially liked Casey and James, even though James annoys me. I suspect a girl goes home. I still don't know all their names. Hopefully the results show won't be too melodramatic tonight.

thursday bug

Sometimes it helps to share with others what bugs your mind.
They may have a solution, a kind word, or a smile of encouragement.
This week my thursday bug is:

Broken cookies in a new package.

celebrate from afar

See that smiling face? It's my sister! Today is her 49th birthday. I wish we were together to celebrate. But without being together, I know I can celebrate her wisdom, patience, kindness, nurturing nature and true beauty. Over the years (especially when we were kids) we would bicker and fight and play and laugh together. And then we turned into friends. I would do anything for her and I know the feeling is mutual. I must make a plan to visit her again this year. Happy birthday, dear sister!

So excited about the new variety of Girl Scout cookies--the Thanks A Lot: a shortbread with chocolate base. Yum!

fourteen inches...

So, we did get at least fourteen inches of snow. And, amazingly enough, the crews worked overnight to clear the streets and the major highway. I don't remember a storm like this--rain to snow to rain to snow. My car was iced over and the door didn't want to open. To say nothing of the window. I actually had to get out of the car to get my coffee this morning. Some of my colleagues live a bit farther north and they got two feet of snow, so I'm not complaining. In fact, I'm not complaining at all, I'm amazed at how well the snow was handled.

I will be glad when spring comes.

ten things tuesday...

In honor of International Women's Day, here are ten facts about women:

1) More American women work in the education, health services, and social assistance industries than in any other industry. These three industries employ nearly one-third of all female workers.

2) Women in the U.S. labor force currently earn just over 77 cents for every one dollar men earn.

3) Approximately 14% of active members in the U.S. armed forces today are women. In 1950, women comprised less than 2% of the U.S. military.

4) The first woman to run for U.S. president was Victoria Woodhull, who campaigned for the office in 1872 under the National Woman’s Suffrage Association. While women would not be granted the right to vote by a constitutional amendment for nearly 50 years, there were no laws prohibiting a woman from running for the chief executive position.

5) The first female governor of a U.S. state was Wyoming governor Nellie Tayloe Ross, elected in 1924. Wyoming was also the first state to give women the right to vote, enacting women’s suffrage in 1869.

6) The first country to grant women the right to vote in the modern era was New Zealand in 1893.

7) According to a 2007 Census Bureau report, one-third of American women aged 25 to 29 have earned a bachelor’s or advanced college degree.

8) In the U.S., Congress established a national week of recognition for women’s history in 1981. This recognition, held during the second week of March, was later expanded into a full month by a congressional resolution in 1987. The month of March is now designated as National Women’s History Month.

9) The first Mother’s Day was held on May 10, 1908, and was organized by Anna Jarvis in West Virginia and Philadelphia. As the event gained popularity throughout the country, Congress designated the second Sunday in May as a national day of recognition for mothers in 1914.

10) In almost every country worldwide, the life expectancy for women is higher than for men.

Statistics culled from a variety of sources.

monday movie meme

Play along with the Bumbles.

This week's movie topic is all about Weight.

I immediately flashed back to the 80s, I remember what a riot Bette Midler was in the movie Ruthless People, as the kidnapped wife who transforms herself.

And more recently, Bridget Jones's Diary. She kept track of her weight, her drinks, her cigarettes. And Colin Firth sweeps her off her feet. *swoon*
