I need to rethink my suitcase. I know I overpacked. Why do I always overpack?? This is kind of a random trip--I mean, I have a destination for Central Maine to attend a workshop, but then I'm just free-flowing. I don't really know how long I'll be gone. I just know I overpacked.

This is a companion book to My Name Is Lucy Barton; the author says that as she wrote Lucy Barton, she knew the characters that are mentioned had compelling stories that had to be told.

It's a series of linked short stories. And I loved it. Each of these stories is full of aching humanity. Each is full of real people. Strout is a master storyteller.

From the publisher:
Written in tandem with My Name Is Lucy Barton and drawing on the small-town characters evoked there, these pages reverberate with the themes of love, loss, and hope that have drawn millions of readers to Strout s work.

“As I was writing My Name Is Lucy Barton,” Strout says, “it came to me that all the characters Lucy and her mother talked about had their own stories—of course!—and so the unfolding of their lives became tremendously important to me.”

Here, among others, are the “Pretty Nicely Girls,” now adults: One trades self-respect for a wealthy husband, the other finds in the pages of a book a kindred spirit who changes her life. Tommy, the janitor at the local high school, has his faith tested in an encounter with an emotionally isolated man he has come to help; a Vietnam veteran suffering from PTSD discovers unexpected solace in the company of a lonely innkeeper; and Lucy Barton’s sister, Vicky, struggling with feelings of abandonment and jealousy, nonetheless comes to Lucy’s aid, ratifying the deepest bonds of family.

fun and funky

Early this morning, the Breakfast Club gathered at the 878 Waterfront Bistro for our gab session. The food was magnificent! And we had mimosas! Mine was made with a fresh pineapple/orange juice blend and soooooo smooth! Yikes, I could have had several!
A very funky, delightful atmosphere. An unusual brunch menu. Attention to detail. Fabulous, friendly service from the husband & wife team--he's the chef, she's the front runner (they both spent time at our table chatting with us). It felt like a special occasion.

2) Lead vocalist/composer Tom Johnston reports that he's made a lot in royalties because so many radio stations use this as a jingle. Tell us a jingle that sticks in your head.

4) When they were still a local band, the Doobie Brothers had a strong following among bikers. Are you attracted to biker culture? I've never really been around bikers

This work of historical fiction focuses on Parisian history I didn't know about. It was a fascinating look at how we identify ourselves with home and the family we choose. There are passages quite lovely to savor. I'm interested to see what my book group makes of it--this is one I liked but didn't love.

“The more I read, the hungrier I become. Each book seemed promising, each page I turned offered an escapade, the allure of another world, other destinies, other dreams.”
― Tatiana de Rosnay, The House I Loved

From the publisher:
Paris, France: 1860's. Hundreds of houses are being razed, whole neighborhoods reduced to ashes. By order of Emperor Napoleon III, Baron Haussman has set into motion a series of large-scale renovations that will permanently alter the face of old Paris, moulding it into a "modern city." The reforms will erase generations of history—but in the midst of the tumult, one woman will take a stand.

Rose Bazelet is determined to fight against the destruction of her family home until the very end; as others flee, she stakes her claim in the basement of the old house on rue Childebert, ignoring the sounds of change that come closer and closer each day. Attempting to overcome the loneliness of her daily life, she begins to write letters to Armand, her beloved late husband. And as she delves into the ritual of remembering, Rose is forced to come to terms with a secret that has been buried deep in her heart for thirty years.

There was that abominable day, toward the end, when I was returning from the market with Mariette, and we came upon Germaine in tears in the street in front of the house. You had gone. Write about your three favorite things to wear.

Now that school is out, I have a summer uniform:

1) Sleeveless top. Even though I am a woman of substance, I have made peace with my arms. So, sleeveless tops for the win!

2) Bermuda shorts. I like the length but they're shorter than pants! No pants in the summer!

3) Accessories. I can almost always be found wearing a necklace or scarf or some kind of accessory. I think it adds an interest to the most humble of outfits in my uniform.

Bonus: 4) Sandals. I can't quite call them flip flops because they're leather; I hate calling them thongs (my students go nuts when I use that word). But I wear sandals as long as I can--beginning in April and going until October. In Maine.

ten things tuesday

Ten things on my Amazon wishlist:

1. Blood Pressure Monitor. One of my colleagues suggested having a home blood pressure monitor. I'm not in a hurry to get it. My blood pressure is quite well managed.

2. Chalkola Chalk Markers. Because they're wet erase, I think I might be able to write weekly notices on my board without smudging by the end of the week.

3. Velvet Hangers. So luxurious! Plus they would grip my clothes better than the shoddy plastic hangars I have now. (NO WIRE HANGERS EVER!!)

4. The Art of Whimsical Lettering. This is a silly goal I've set for the summer--to work on my fancy lettering. I have precise handwriting on the board, but I lack the ability for fun, fancy lettering.

5. Small Weighted Lap Pad I'm fascinated by the idea of a weighted blanket! This is like a lap-size blanket, that might be comfy-cozy when I'm in my recliner.

6. Magic Adjustable Clothes and Shirts Folder Board. Have wanted one of these gizmos since I saw it in use at an upscale clothing store. Who knew you could get them for home use???

7. Brilliant Thoughts, Ridiculously Good Ideas, File & Forget Decorative File Folders. This set of funky folders made me chuckle--especially the File & Forget folder!

8. Kashi TLC Chewy Granola Bar. Every day--breakfast!

9. Harry Potter Quotes and Sayings Art Prints. I love these! Where they don't come framed, I could use them for my bulletin board quote wall. Or I can frame them for home.

10. Ticonderoga Wood-Cased #2 Pencils. I am that teacher. I buy pencils in bulk so I can give them to students. I know there are colleagues of mine who resent me "just giving" the pencils away but seriously?? It's a pencil.

This book is wonderful. It's politically relevant, yet the tragedy doesn't destroy the characters--so there's hope, humanity, and even some humor.

“Sometimes you can do everything right and things will still go wrong. The key is to never stop doing right.”
― Angie Thomas, The Hate U Give

“Brave doesn't mean you're not scared. It means you go on even though you're scared.”
― Angie Thomas, The Hate U Give

“I can't change where I come from or what I've been through, so why should I be ashamed of what makes me, me?”
― Angie Thomas, The Hate U Give

From the publisher:
Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.

Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil's name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.

But what Starr does or does not say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.

As Long as We Got Each Other

1) This is the theme from the 1980s sitcom, Growing Pains. Alan Thicke played Dr. Jason Seaver, one of TVs popular dads. Who is your favorite TV dad? either Pa Ingalls or John Walton, Sr.

2) Joanna Kearns, who played Jason's wife, reports that she teased her costar by calling him, "Al," a nickname he hated. Is there someone in your life that you enjoy needling? a couple of students spring to mind

3) For most of the series, the Seaver children each represented a "type." The oldest, Mike, was the trouble maker. The daughter, Carol, was the brainiac. Young Ben could be very high maintenance. Which of the Seaver kids were you most like when you were growing up? the brainiac

4) In the song, BJ Thomas sings about being "the luckiest dreamer who never quit dreaming." If you could have any dream come true this Saturday, what would you wish for? no rain (I'm heading out on a road trip)

5) When he mans the grill, Sam's father proudly wears the "Kiss the Chef" she gave him for Father's Day years ago. Tell us about a gift you gave someone that was a hit. I got my dad an Adirondack lawn chair and it's just what he wanted!

6) Sam's dad takes his grilling very seriously and jealously guards his special marinade recipe. Do you have a secret you haven't even shared with family members? they don't know about the clutter

7) He recommends using a grill basket when barbecuing vegetables so you don't have to worry about them falling through the grill. Share one of your culinary tips with us. uh... there are some mighty fine no-bake lasagna noodles out there now

8) Sam's father hates it when she swears. What's the last curse word you used? shit

9) Sam's father satisfies his afternoon sugar craving with an almost endless stream of Butter Rum Lifesavers. When you crave a snack, do you usually want something sweet or salty? hmmm... I usually have a yogurt or a "Balanced Break"

“Such fascinating things, libraries. She closes her eyes. She could
walk inside and step into a murder, a love story, a complete account
of somebody else’s life, or mutiny on the high seas. Such potential;
such adventure—there’s a shimmer of malfeasance in trying other
ways of being.”
― Ashley Hay, The Railwayman's Wife

I loved this book. It's a beautiful examination of life after a loss--the loss of a loved one, the loss of witnessing war, and how self-identity is forced to change because of the loss. The setting is a character, too, though, the small, coastal town on the edge of New South Wales, Australia. Ani, Mac, Roy, Isabel, Frank, Iris, and Mrs. May are characters that I felt for, genuinely felt for. It's lovely. A lovely book.

From the publisher:
When Anikka Lachlan’s husband, Mac, is killed in a railway accident, she is offered—and accepts—a job at the Railway Institute’s library and searches there for some solace in her unexpectedly new life. But in Thirroul, in 1948, she’s not the only person trying to chase dreams through books. There’s Roy McKinnon, who found poetry in the mess of war, but who has now lost his words and his hope. There’s Frank Draper, trapped by the guilt of those his medical treatment and care failed on their first day of freedom. All three struggle to find their own peace, and their own new story.

But along with the firming of this triangle of friendship and a sense of lives inching towards renewal come other extremities—and misunderstandings. In the end, love and freedom can have unexpected ways of expressing themselves.

The Railwayman’s Wife explores the power of beginnings and endings, and how hard it can sometimes be to tell them apart. Most of all, it celebrates love in all its forms, and the beauty of discovering that loving someone can be as extraordinary as being loved yourself.

The Think Write Thursday topic for June 15, 2017 is to consider what it means to be at the halfway point of the year. Did you state some intentions for 2017? If so, check in on them and give us an update.

I didn't really set resolutions or official goals for the year. Although I did want to be mindful about spending. And I suppose I'm doing better on the financial front, so there's that. I also wanted to continue last year's "Year of Badassery" by having Fierce as my word this year. I'm not so sure I'm living up to it. But, I'm still stepping out of my comfort zone in several areas, so there's that. I set a reading goal of 60 books and I'm on track to meet it, so there's that.

Until the past week, I've felt like this year was going along great. Then all the substantial changes at school hit me in one fell swoop and I feel overwhelmed. Plus some health concerns of family members are weighing on me, although I am not in panic mode (yet). BUT--it's the beginning of summer vacation! I just got new tires put on my car and I'm ready to roll for adventures, hijinks, and shenanigans!

And there she was, just inches away, his bride, staring into his eyes as he studied hers. There were so many colors in them: grey and gold and a green that was almost metallic. In the center, near the pupil, was a flash of ocher so bright it was almost red.
"Your eyelashes are different colors," she said at last.
"Different how?"
"Different to each other--you've got blond ones and ginger ones and brown ones. Like your beard. I've never noticed that before."

I choose the books I read based on all of those. I generally read contemporary fiction, mysteries, thrillers, and rom-coms. There are authors I read for different genres. I get recommendations from a couple of message boards and newsletters. There are a couple of bloggers with similar tastes as mine, and I follow their recommendations, too. I'm not quite sure what to say about this book. It's sparse and there are few answers. But in this case, the halting narration makes sense. I really liked it.

From the publisher:
Lucy Barton is recovering slowly from what should have been a simple operation. Her mother, to whom she hasn’t spoken for many years, comes to see her. Gentle gossip about people from Lucy’s childhood in Amgash, Illinois, seems to reconnect them, but just below the surface lie the tension and longing that have informed every aspect of Lucy’s life: her escape from her troubled family, her desire to become a writer, her marriage, her love for her two daughters. Knitting this powerful narrative together is the brilliant storytelling voice of Lucy herself: keenly observant, deeply human, and truly unforgettable.

impulse control

I have none. I got a bonus payment and it went to my head--I upgraded my phone to the iPhone 7 (I got the red, to support charity) and also upgraded my iPad mini. What the what? No buyer's remorse but... no impulse control.

Lazy Bones

1) This song is about a guy who'd rather nap than do his chores. Are there things you should be doing right now, instead of hanging around the blogosphere, answering these questions? there are several things I should be doing... maybe later

2) This song mentions a lazy afternoon of fishing. When did you last go fishing? I don't know that I ever really have been

3) The lyrics catch our hero sleeping in both the sun and the shade. Do you have a nice, shady place to nap on your front lawn? Or would we catch you lying in the sun? I would definitely not be in the sun

4) This week's featured artist, Leon Redbone, is a difficult man to nail down. Over the years he's claimed to be born in Ontario, and Philadelphia, and even Cyprus. Tell us about a time you got caught in a fib.
oh, at school--I fibbed to some students about something inconsequential

5) Mr. Redbone has said that taking himself too seriously would be "the gentle kiss of death." What's something that you always take seriously and just can't joke about? I hate it when tech support people give suggestions I've already tried

6) He has retired from public life, and that includes his Facebook page, which is no longer available. What did you last post to your Facebook page? today, I think

7) Leon always wore dark glasses when he performed. Do your sunglasses have gray, green, brown or rose colored lenses? ha--they have clear lenses

8) Recently Dick Van Dyke performed this song at a charity benefit, aided by his a capella quartet, The Vantastix. Last year, at age 90, he campaigned for Bernie Sanders. So Mr. Van Dyke is certainly not a "lazy bones." Who's the most active, energetic person in your life? my dad

9) Random question: You're at dinner with friends and someone begins a very long joke with, "Stop me if you've heard this before." You have heard it, many times before. Do you stop him? Or do you just sit through it again?
I sit through it again... this happens often

I'm reading Opening Belle.

Tornadoes, illness, famine, floods, and fires. I'm trying to get some perspective. It's nothing, really, my little world and my and its little problems. I know I'm stronger than this. Where is my woman of steel hiding? This is not the person I think of as me. I resemble a car crash lately, a sodden, sulky, weepy, empty mess, rumpled and barely standing at the edge of Union Square.
