PostSecret is an ongoing community art project where people mail in their secrets anonymously on one side of a postcard. I like to post one that speaks to me each week.
Christmas 2015: Before I went away for the holiday, I took my darling old tomcat Joey to the vet and asked, "Will he see the New Year?" Joey was 20, which is ancient for a cat, and was on medication for high blood pressure and kidney disease.
The vet reminded me that these diseases were progressive and incurable. But that Joey was happy and social and responding to treatment at the moment and there was no reason whatsoever for me not to take my scheduled Christmas trip to Key West.
I don't think a waking hour went by that I didn't worry about Joey. I was so happy to arrive home and find him eager to play laser tag. (He died that February.)
