Thing one: I ducked out of school a little early today--my study hall students got shipped out to other study halls (which was basically me cashing in favors). Although I emailed the principal to ask, I didn't receive a reply--so I figured no news is good news and went.
Thing two: My dad and I went to a retirement reception for a family friend at the local university. I'm so glad I went. And a bonus to go with Dr. Daddy.
Thing three: I had planned to go to Riverside Park to hear a local band play but I might be too peopled out. Crowds. Threat of rain.

ten things tuesday
The end of the school year is drawing close and I'm dreaming about summer vacation and perhaps a trip to Québec City. Most of these activities I did when I chaperoned the World Languages Club on their annual trip to Québec in 2017. I fell in love with the city and want to go again. It's a good destination since it's between 4-5 hours away.
Here are 10 things to do in Québec City.
1) See the Château Frontenac in Person
2) Take a Turn on Dufferin Terrace
3) Travel Back in Time along the Fortifications
4) Explore Beautiful Place Royale
5) Fall in Love with Petit-Champlain
6) Take a Quiet Moment in Notre-Dame de Québec Basilica-Cathedral
7) Dive into the City’s Military History at the Citadelle
8) Tour the Parliament Building
9) Experience the Charm of the Old Port
10) Get out there on the Plains of Abraham

It's a character driven novel, not a plot-driven one. Because it's character-driven I didn't love it. It's a coming of age story with themes of family, misfits, Catholic guilt, and an exploration of God's will.
From the publisher:
From the publisher:
Sam Hill always saw the world through different eyes. Born with red pupils, he was called “Devil Boy” or Sam “Hell” by his classmates; “God’s will” is what his mother called his ocular albinism. Her words were of little comfort, but Sam persevered, buoyed by his mother’s devout faith, his father’s practical wisdom, and his two other misfit friends.
Sam believed it was God who sent Ernie Cantwell, the only African American kid in his class, to be the friend he so desperately needed. And that it was God’s idea for Mickie Kennedy to storm into Our Lady of Mercy like a tornado, uprooting every rule Sam had been taught about boys and girls.
Forty years later, Sam, a small-town eye doctor, is no longer certain anything was by design—especially not the tragedy that caused him to turn his back on his friends, his hometown, and the life he’d always known. Running from the pain, eyes closed, served little purpose. Now, as he looks back on his life, Sam embarks on a journey that will take him halfway around the world. This time, his eyes are wide open—bringing into clear view what changed him, defined him, and made him so afraid, until he can finally see what truly matters.

God Bless America
Memorial Day is the federal holiday designated to honor American service people who died in battle.
1) Memorial Day was introduced after the Civil War. Originally called Decoration Day, this is when memorials, as well as the graves of veterans, are to be decorated with flags and flowers on this day to show our appreciation. Is there a war memorial in your neighborhood? yes, there is in a special little park
2) Andrew Johnson, our 17th President, was in office the first time Memorial/Decoration Day was celebrated. Have you ever met one of our 45 Presidents? no, I have not
3) According to the AAA, more than 30 million Americans will hit the road this weekend and drive more than 50 miles. Will you be traveling far from home this weekend? I will not--probably 10 miles at the farthest that I know of
4) Memorial Day kicks off the summer season. What's your favorite picnic food? plain chips
5) As you answer these questions, is there an air conditioner or fan on? no, but I do have a window open
6) Though she's belting out one of America's best loved patriotic songs, Deanna Durbin was born in Canada. Is there anyone in your family or circle of friends who wasn't born in the USA? no--which is kind of weird since I'm right at the Canadian border
7) No longer a household name, Ms. Durbin was once one of the biggest stars in the country. One of her most popular films was 1937's One Hundred Men and a Girl, which was nominated for a Best Picture Oscar. Recommend a movie that you really like, but don't think many Saturday 9ers have seen. The Fisher King
8) Back in 1938, Deanna Durbin had her handprints cemented in front of the TCL Chinese Theater on Hollywood Blvd. Have you ever visited that Los Angeles tourist attraction? I have never been to LA
9) Random question: What food did you hate as a child, but enjoy now? there's a looooong list, but I'll go with tomatoes

And what I cannot document, I can deduce from a profound understanding of my mother and her steadfast and unyielding insistence that her son would receive a Catholic education.

It was good but not great. Kristin's disappearance is a catalyst for the action but the interesting dynamics among the women and how their lives are changed by Kristin's actions are what the story is about. I'm hoping there is a good discussion for my book group!
From the publisher:
From the publisher:
When a group of neighborhood women gathers, wine in hand, around a fire pit where their backyards meet one Saturday night, most of them are just ecstatic to have discovered that their baby monitors reach that far. It’s a rare kid-free night, and they’re giddy with it. They drink too much, and the conversation turns personal.
By Monday morning, one of them is gone.
Everyone knows something about everyone else in the quirky small Ohio town of Yellow Springs, but no one can make sense of the disappearance. Kristin was a sociable twin mom, college administrator, and doctor’s wife who didn’t seem all that bothered by her impending divorce—and the investigation turns up more questions than answers, with her husband, Paul, at the center. For her closest neighbor, Clara, the incident triggers memories she thought she’d put behind her—and when she’s unable to extract herself from the widening circle of scrutiny, her own suspicions quickly grow. But the neighborhood’s newest addition, Izzy, is determined not to jump to any conclusions—especially since she’s dealing with a crisis of her own.
As the police investigation goes from a media circus to a cold case, the neighbors are forced to reexamine what’s going on behind their own closed doors—and to ask how well anyone really knows anyone else.

Secret Love
1) In this song Doris admits she's spoken to the stars, "the way dreamers often do." Do you often daydream? well... I go to my happy place, if that's the same thing, during faculty meetings
2) What's the last secret you kept? (It doesn't have to be romantic.) if I revealed it what kind of secret keeper would I be?
3) While "Secret Love" was one of Miss Day's best-selling records, and the song won an Oscar, she did not perform it at the Academy Awards Ceremony. She said she was just too nervous to sing it live before an international television audience and an auditorium full of entertainment professionals. When did you last suffer an attack of nerves? I frequently do
4) Doris' well-publicized attack of Oscar stage fright was unexpected because she began her career as a band singer, performing before live audiences every night. But she reportedly did develop more phobias over the years, including a fear of flying. Is there anything that scares you now, as an adult, that didn't frighten you as a child? crowded places with unstructured time (like the high school cafeteria during lunch)
5) Doris Day made 39 movies between 1948 and 1968. She said one of her favorite things about filmmaking was working with costume designers on her wardrobe. Do you enjoy shopping for clothes? I LOVE it!
6) Doris confessed that when she had to lose weight for a role, she gave up ice cream. If we checked your freezer, would we find any ice cream? you would, indeed
7) In 1985 she hosted a cable show called Doris Day's Best Friends. She used the show as a platform to promote pet adoptions and animal welfare. Most of the guests were celebrity friends who reportedly donated their salaries for appearing on the show to Doris' pet foundation. Did you more recently ask a friend for a favor, or perform a favor for a friend? I most recently performed a favor for a friend
8) For more than 20 years, Doris co-owned the Cypress Inn in Carmel, CA. The Inn expects to continue on without her, and maintain the pet-friendly policies she introduced. Have you ever traveled with your dog or cat? sadly, I do not have my own doggo
9) Random question: What's the last thing you complained about? I used #strangerdanger as a tag on Instagram from my laundromat adventures

Thing one: Modern Mrs. Darcy's Summer Reading Guide is here! I'm so excited for my summer reading! I chose a few for audio and a few for nook books.
Thing two: I was observed today by a teacher from a neighboring school district. Funnily enough, he did his student teaching with me about (gulp) fifteen years ago and we were so in sync that we frequently dressed alike--black pants, white shirts one time, another time was a jeans day and we both wore green sweaters with jeans, and yet another time was khaki pants and denim shirts. It was fun to have him in my classes now that he's a seasoned teacher.
Thing three: The local Walmart has grocery pick up service now. I'm going to try it out, even though I abhor that store. Convenience rules, though. And I had a coupon code to try it.

Ten random things:
1) My bestie and I spent the day together on a quick road trip to Central Maine for some shopping. It was a relaxing, fun day. Not a lot of shopping was done but we had many long conversations and laughs. And a delicious lunch that included mini-lava cakes.
2) I felt like I was playing hooky. I slept in. It was wonderful.
3) I did, however, receive an email from the principal that he needs to see me tomorrow. This could be interesting.
4) My outfit today is incredibly comfortable--I wish I could wear blue jeans to school daily.
5) The weather forecast for tomorrow includes rain and snow. Puhleeze! It's May!
6) I'm having a tough time thinking of a gift for my Dad's birthday Friday. I asked him if he needs or wants anything particular.
7) RIP-Tim Conway. Thank you for all the laughs. You were an amazing comedic talent.
8) I need a haircut.

No spoilers here. It's being called a psychological thriller but I think it's more of a character study or a whodunit. Listening to the narrators of the audio version, the voice of Theo is superbly cast. Most of the story unfolds from Theo's point of view, but there are moments of Alicia's perspective too. The end took me by surprise. I didn't see it coming. This is one heck of a debut novel.
From the publisher:
From the publisher:
ALICIA
Alicia Berenson writes a diary as a release, an outlet – and to prove to her beloved husband that everything is fine. She can’t bear the thought of worrying Gabriel, or causing him pain.
Until, late one evening, Alicia shoots Gabriel five times and then never speaks another word.
Alicia's refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London.
THEO
Forensic psychotherapist Theo Faber is convinced he can successfully treat Alicia, where all others have failed. Obsessed with investigating her crime, his discoveries suggest Alicia’s silence goes far deeper than he first thought. Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations--a search for the truth that threatens to consume him...
And if she speaks, would he want to hear the truth?

Dr. Dad
Today my dad received the award of a lifetime--an honorary doctoral degree. He officially now holds an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters Degree. I couldn't be more proud. It was a wonderful graduation ceremony, reception, and then a special family dinner.
Here's a summary:

Entrance--anticipation! |
![]() |
His new stole and diploma! |
![]() |

Here's a summary:
Mr. P. Daniel Ladner was born in Presque Isle in 1937, the son of Fay and Viola Ladner, and graduated from Mapleton High School in 1955 as valedictorian and president of his graduating class. He went on to study band directing at Boston University, but, after a semester, transferred to Aroostook State Teachers College (now UMPI) and graduated as president of his class in 1959 with a degree in education. He served as a fifth grade teacher in Presque Isle for 10 years and as an English and public speaking teacher at Presque Isle High School for 15 years after that. During his time at the high school, he directed the high school chorus and drama club and helped found the Shipmates Playhouse. He later worked as the Director of the UMPI Upward Bound program for five years, and for 10 years as the director of the Caribou Performing Arts Center, where he produced numerous Broadway musicals while also teaching drama and speech for Caribou High School.
Throughout his career and since his retirement in 1999, Ladner has been highly involved in his community. Between 1973 and 1994, he served as a driving force with UMPI’s Pioneer Playhouse, performing, directing, and supporting the local theater group in presenting more than 80 productions on the Wieden Auditorium stage. He starred in countless plays on campus, including the Centennial Homecoming dinner theater production in 2003, and directed the first musical in which now-famous, Tony-nominated actor John Cariani starred. He is a founding member and the first president of the Presque Isle Community Players, established in 1989. Ladner has also served as a judge for many state drama festivals at the regional and state levels, as host of County Tele Quiz—a high school quiz show that aired on WAGM in the 1970s and 1980s, and as a judge in the United Way of Aroostook’s Northern Star competition.
Along the way, he has received numerous accolades. He was named a lifetime member of the New England Drama Council in 1987, the Citizen of the Year by the City of Presque Isle in 1988, the recipient of the Spirit of Caribou award in 1997, the recipient of the first-ever Lifetime Achievement Award from the Maine Arts Sponsors Association, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Presque Isle Chamber of Commerce in 2004. He has twice received UMPI’s Distinguished Alumni Award, and the Maine Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association named him Choral Director of the Year.
He continues to serve as the director of the Caribou Choral Society, a position he has held since 1977, and as the organist and choir director at St. Mary’s Catholic Church and Grant Memorial United Methodist Church, both in Presque Isle. He also has been an active member of the American Choral Directors Association and the National Association of Pastoral Musicians. In addition, he has been a member of the Caribou Rotary Club since 2000, and has twice been named a Paul Harris Fellow, one of the most prestigious honors given by the international organization.

The Perfect Fan
1) In this song, a son thanks his mother for helping him grow up strong and confident. Who is the last person you thanked? What did they do for you? a student wrote me a heartfelt note for teacher appreciation day
2) Who was the last person to thank you for something? I guess it was my student--thanking me for making my classroom a welcoming environment
3) This is from the Backstreet Boys' album Millennium, recorded and released in 1999. Do you remember where you were and what you were doing when 1999 turned into 2000? I was celebrating with some friends that I've drifted apart from (which is sad) and we sang and danced all night--they had a karaoke machine--it was a BLAST
4) This song was written by Backstreet Boy Brian Littrell. Brian voiced himself on an episode of PBS' Arthur. Arthur has been described as an "animated anthropomorphic aardvark" -- which can be difficult to say. Do you easily get tongue tied? yes, I used to have a stammer so I have some tricks for tongue twisters
5) The French word for "mother" is "mère." What other French words do you know? Oui, je parle un peu de français. Je comprends plus que je ne peux parler.
6) Mother's Day is a big holiday for card shops. So are birthdays, weddings, and St. Patrick's Day. Hallmark sells greetings for everything from "Congratulations on Your New Job" to "Happy Retirement." Who received the most recent card you bought? I can't remember--could it possibly have been the Christmas card I got Dad?
7) Have you put away your winter clothes yet? yes, but I regret the decision
8) Mother Winters used to scold Sam for leaving her dirty dishes in the sink. Sam admits it: as a grown up, she's still a bit of a slob. Do lean toward "neat" or "messy?" messy without any equivocation
9) To celebrate Mother's Day, Sam is giving away her mother's favorite: Hershey Bars. Would you prefer classic milk chocolate, dark chocolate or milk chocolate with almonds? today I will choose milk chocolate with almonds

I am...
Reading: reading The Silent Patient
Listening to: U2--Dancing Barefoot
Loving: a short faculty meeting after school today
Thinking: about shifting my mindset--and taking steps to avoid the exhaustion that usually is the end of the school year
Feeling: fabulous--I got a ton of compliments on my outfit today! Who doesn't like to hear, "You look so cute!"
Celebrating: my Advanced Placement Psychology class is having a party during class and I'll be setting up stations around the room for them to do some reflecting activities--selfie station, thank you letters, One Word inspirations, motivational quote coloring sheets and the like
Grateful for: some really productive self-care conversations that are helping me shift my view for the end of the school year
Weather: it is 69 degrees and sunny--wow!
Enjoying: chatting with my sisters

The tagline of this book really captured my fancy: If you knew the date of your death, how would you live your life? But the execution of this story left me flat. I didn't connect with the characters, they were whiny and entitled. I wanted to smack them and tell them to get over themselves.
From the publisher:
From the publisher:
It's 1969 in New York City's Lower East Side, and word has spread of the arrival of a mystical woman, a traveling psychic who claims to be able to tell anyone the day they will die. The Gold children—four adolescents on the cusp of self-awareness—sneak out to hear their fortunes.
The prophecies inform their next five decades. Golden-boy Simon escapes to the West Coast, searching for love in '80s San Francisco; dreamy Klara becomes a Las Vegas magician, obsessed with blurring reality and fantasy; eldest son Daniel seeks security as an army doctor post-9/11; and bookish Varya throws herself into longevity research, where she tests the boundary between science and immortality.
A sweeping novel of remarkable ambition and depth, The Immortalists probes the line between destiny and choice, reality and illusion, this world and the next. It is a deeply moving testament to the power of story, the nature of belief, and the unrelenting pull of familial bonds.

He didn't think ballet dancers would be so loud, but women chatter in groups as they stretch against the wall and men in black tights shout at one another, kneading their quads. The receptionist signs him up for the twelve thirty mixed level--"Trial class is free"--and hands him a pair of black canvas slippers from the lost and found bin.
