What has made me super happy the past week is this happy couple's celebration. My sisters have been in town to celebrate and family time is a premium.

• Describe one of your reading habits.
• Tell us what book(s) you recently bought for yourself or someone else, and why you chose that/those book(s).
• Tell us what you’re reading right now — what you think of it, so far; why you chose it; what you are (or, aren’t) enjoying about it.
• What book are you currently desperate to get your hands on? Tell us about it!
• Do you have a bookish rant? Something about books or reading (or the industry) that gets your ire up? Share it with us!

I hate when life gets in the way of my reading.

Sometimes it helps to share with others what bugs your mind.
They may have a solution, a kind word, or a smile of encouragement.
This week my thursday bug is:

Waiting for the Freshman Orientation to be over so I can see my sisters. I don't teach any Freshmen so this is kind of a waste of time for me.

twittascope

Today's Twittascope: O.M.G. but this is eerily accurate!
Thursday, August 15, 2013 - You know what's expected of you today, but you may have other things that you would rather do. Meeting your obligations can be draining because you don't want to waste your time on anything that's not important to you. Conserve your energy to connect with a special someone or just to enjoy some downtime by yourself. Paradoxically, maintaining sensible boundaries now widens your horizons in the long run.

Once again I had a delicious lunch at Cafe Sorpreso. But what really made me happy was sitting there for hours with my friends just yakking and laughing away. It's our last leisurely lunch before school begins. We made it count.

ten things tuesday

Ten things I take for granted, living in a rural region.

1) Night skies. I can see the stars. I can see the Northern Lights. Regularly.

2) Wild animals. There are more moose, deer, and bears here than people. I see foxes, bunnies, and other beautiful creatures.

3) Domestic animals. I saw an ad on TV that had a rooster crowing and it made me realize there are people in this country who have not seen or heard roosters. Or seen and milked a cow or goat.

4) Lack of traffic.

5) Beautiful views. Lots of gorgeous fields and forests, rivers and lakes. Rolling hills and mountains. Fantastic sunrises and sunsets.

6) Fresh air. We rarely have any kind of air quality issues, mostly they are caused by forest fires.

7) Knowing people everywhere you go. It's kind of comforting to see familiar faces in random places.

8) Customer service. I find customer service to be friendlier and less rushed here. In most places. That's a generalization, for sure.

9) Oddball festivals. We're home to the Potato Blossom Festival, the Whoopie Pie Festival, the Moxie Festival (Moxie is a unique soft drink).

10) The pace. Things are slower here. There's something about visiting a fast-paced city that's exciting but the pace of life here at the end of the earth is much less stressful.

I don't like snacking when reading. Not with a physical book nor an ereader. Especially not my Nook, I don't want to smear on the screen. Or get grains of salt or sugar on it. And I get grossed out when I read a physical book that's got schmutz in it.

It was an amazing family time.

Sliced Ham with a Roasted Apple & Mango Chutney with Smoked Gouda, Red Onions, Spring Greens, Tomatoes and
Bacon served grilled in panino or white or wheat artisan bread.

Not only did we have a wonderful meal, but we laughed and chatted and I helped her set up her new Nook HD+. She's going to be a gadget person after all.

just finished reading...

A coming of age story for middle aged women! Ginny is an empty-nester whose daughter, Jem, has just gone off to university. Ginny has to reinvent herself and her life now that Jem's starting off on her own. What I like about Mansell's books are the secondary characters' stories weaving in and out of the main thread. There isn't so much going on that it's tough to keep track. There are moments of tenderness and heartbreak as well as some laugh out loud funny moments. And I wanted all the characters to be my friend. Well, maybe not Gavin.

A chick-lit, rom-com, perfect for lounging around and reading.

• What are you currently reading? I started listening to My Lucky Life in and Out of Show Business by Dick Van Dyke. And I'm still reading Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel. I kind of started Thinking of You by Jill Mansell, too, on my iPod.

finished...

From the publisher:
FBI Special Agent Kate O’Hare is known for her fierce dedication and discipline on the job, chasing down the world’s most wanted criminals and putting them behind bars. Her boss thinks she is tenacious and ambitious; her friends think she is tough, stubborn, and maybe even a bit obsessed. And while Kate has made quite a name for herself for the past five years, the only name she’s cared about is Nicolas Fox—an international crook she wants in more ways than one.

Audacious, handsome, and dangerously charming, Nicolas Fox is a natural con man, notorious for running elaborate scams on very high-profile people. At first he did it for the money. Now he does it for the thrill. He knows that the FBI has been hot on his trail—particularly Kate O’Hare, who has been watching his every move. For Nick, there’s no greater rush than being pursued by a beautiful woman . . . even one who aims to lock him up. But just when it seems that Nicolas Fox has been captured for good, he pulls off his greatest con of all: he convinces the FBI to offer him a job, working side by side with Special Agent Kate O’Hare.

Problem is, teaming up to stop a corrupt investment banker who’s hiding on a private island in Indonesia is going to test O’Hare’s patience and Fox’s skill. Not to mention the skills of their ragtag team made up of flamboyant actors, wanted wheelmen, and Kate’s dad. High-speed chases, pirates, and Toblerone bars are all in a day’s work . . . if O’Hare and Fox don’t kill each other first.

Such a fun summer read--a little romance, a little beach, a lot of adventure, and a lot of snappy dialogue! I loved the secondary characters and can't wait for more in this series.

ten things tuesday

Ten things W:

1) One of my favorite movies, the title of this blog comes from it:

2) Water. I drink at least a half-gallon a day, if not more.

3) Wishes. I don't like to waste my birthday wishes on frivolous stuff. And I occasionally wish at 11:11.

4) White board. After about thirteen years of asking, I got white boards in my classroom. No.More.Chalk!

5) Water for Elephants. A movie and a book I enjoyed.

6) Wonder. I hope I never lose my sense of wonder with the world. The smallest things entertain me.

7) Whiskey. When I lived in Ireland, I was quite ill with a cold and only felt better after trying the Irish remedy of a Hot Irish Whiskey. A jigger of hot water, a jigger of whiskey, and a lemon stuffed with cloves, which steeps in the whiskey/water until it's cool enough to drink.

8) Whistling. I'm a good whistler. And I enjoy hearing someone whistle along to music. I can't do the finger whistles, though. And I'm not fond of wolf whistles. But musical whistling is cool.

9) World travel. I've been half-way around the world and would like to see more. Although I have no desire to see Asia.

10) Whodunnit? My summer reality guilty pleasure. Sunday nights on ABC at 9 o'clock. Hilariously good fun. I am so glad I've been watching it.

I've got a couple of books going this week that are vastly different: The Heist by Janet Evanovich and Lee Goldberg is a great summer read--a bit of adventure, the threat of violence, exotic locations, and a hint of romance. I'm enjoying listening to it and can't wait for more of the series (at least, I suspect it's going to be a series). I'm also reading Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel and I don't think I like it. It got rave reviews and I've already picked up the sequel so I am determined to read it. It seems like the stage is being set for some major happening or event but the build up is taking too long. Let's move along! What's keeping me going is the atmospheric writing.

yawn...

For some reason I haven't gotten a full night's sleep lately.  This time I woke up at 2 o'clock and am wide awake.  I haven't been napping (I know) so I can't blame that.  It is annoying!
Beauty sleep, I can't afford to miss!

8/4 I had a dream about school, not a bad dream, but a dream nevertheless.  It caused me to wake up at my regular "get ready for school" time and I can't seem to fall back to sleep.  What makes me happy is that I'm starting to feel and think about going back to school as a positive, that I don't have vacationitis (yet).

thursday bug

Sometimes it helps to share with others what bugs your mind.
They may have a solution, a kind word, or a smile of encouragement.
This week my thursday bug is:

Showing up an hour early for my book group meeting.

8/1

It is time, once again, for the August Happiness Challenge! Thanks to The Gal Herself!

Here's a brief explanation of the Challenge: "Each day in August you are to post about something that makes *you* happy. Pretty simple. And, it doesn't even have to be every day if you don't want it to be. It's a great way to remind ourselves that there are positive things going on in our lives, our communities, and the world."

8/1: Today my book group met to discuss The Casual Vacancy by JK Rowling. We had lunch at a nifty bistro and talked for over an hour steady about the book. What makes me happy is the variety of people in the group. We never all feel one way or another about anything. So many diverse opinions. It made for a very lively discussion. And it made me happy to connect with my colleagues and friends.
