late to the party...

I don't know how I got to the Honey Badger party late, but I just saw the video and it really cracks me up.

ten things tuesday...

Ten things:

1) My students seem to be responding well to our discussions about the Bill of Rights. I'm trying to make it relevant to them in today's world.

2) One of my AP students is worrying me with her lack of follow-through. She doesn't deserve to be in the AP class.

3) In today's mail, I got a pair of jeans that fit me as though they were made for me. I have such a hard time finding jeans!

4) Also in today's mail was a box of fun holiday gifts I ordered. I can't wait to see the reactions of my nieces.

5) I'm excited to wrap presents and get things shipped off to Pennsylvania and Virginia. I hate that my sisters and their families aren't able to be with us for Christmas. It would be a blast for us to all be together.

6) I got to spend a lot of time with my niece last weekend, we had a lot of fun. We went to see Twilight: Breaking Dawn part 1. It was better than I expected because I had such low expectations.

7) Some needy students have adopted me, they hang around my classroom all day long. I like it, but sometimes I need a break from being surrounded by people all day long.

8) I feel guilty that I accidentally photocopied the same handout twice. I hate wasting that paper. I could try to save it for next year but I'm afraid I'll forget I have them copied.

9) It was really nice to go to bed early last night. I mean, it was soooooooo nice.

10) This cracked me up:

11.28.2011

declare...

Showed this to my class today, along with the recitation of the Declaration and the Apologize video. Now they're going to work on their analysis roles of the document.

yawn...

Every Monday after vacation I feel the same way--tired out. Today is no different.

True to Mansell's form, Rumor Has It is full of lively characters and delightful plot twists. Tilly is reinventing her life after her live-in-boyfriend leaves her in London. She moves to her best friend's small town of Cotswold. Erin is involved with Fergus, who is separated from Stella. Tilly gets a position as a girl Friday for Max, primarily taking care of his daughter Lou, and inadvertently taking care of his ex-wife Kaye. And of course the subject of the rumors is Jack, the romantic hero. Keeping up with the cast of characters is not a chore in this book, though. They weave themselves through the plot and the twists as a fast-paced read. I really enjoyed this book.

ten things tuesday...

Ten things about parent/teacher conferences:

1) I rarely get to see the parents of the at-risk students. Those students who need just a bit more encouragement and support from home.

2) It's nice to meet the parents of students who are doing well, to let them know their students' strengths.

3) Being diplomatic in nature, when I do meet with the challenging students' parents, I am able to say what I need to say.

4) It can be a delicate proposition to explain that "junior" isn't as attentive as s/he could be. Although, most parents of sixteen year-olds already know this.

5) What is fun, is telling a parent about how their child has blossomed and grown during the course of the year. I got to tell parents that last night and their son was with them, we got to have a conversation about it. He feels comfortable in my class and speaks right up. I guess last year he didn't ever talk to anyone or participate.

6) When I'm busy with conferences, I'm busy busy.

7) When I'm not busy... I'm not busy but can't do the intensive things I need to do. It's tough to be in the middle of grading essays when continually interrupted.

8) It's weird to have more conferences than anyone else. But to take less time than the English teachers.

9) I'm glad I had the classes fill out a strengths/weaknesses sheet yesterday. It's a great way to introduce parents to what their child is thinking about their performance in class.

10) I'm glad we have conferences just once a year.

11.21.2011

trial by fire...

Today's a long day: teach all my classes then hang around until dinner at 4 and conferences from 5-8. Turn around and come back for Tuesday at 8 am. I had some photocopying to do after school but the copier got overheated and stopped working. So much for that. I did dust off my desk and put out a basket of goodies. Otherwise, I'm just tired. I did put up some student work, which looks cool. And there are notes on the boards, which are content related so parents can see what we are currently working on. I want my vacation to start now!!!!!

just finished reading...

From the Publisher:
Two women running away from their marriages collide on a foggy highway, killing one of them. The survivor, Isabelle, is left to pick up the pieces, not only of her own life, but of the lives of the devastated husband and fragile son that the other woman, April, has left behind. Together, they try to solve the mystery of where April was running to, and why. As these three lives intersect, the book asks, How well do we really know those we love—and how do we forgive the unforgivable?

A very interesting premise that is thoughtfully carried out with complicated yet believable characters and story. The story explores the after effects that a devastating accident has. I kind of wish our book group chose this book because I want to talk about it--all the layers in characters and plot lines.

From the publisher:
Radio meets print journalism in this slim, entertaining anthology of outtakes from Carrier's last 20 years as a writer, hitchhiker, radio producer and occasional war correspondent. The book consists of stories originally broadcast on National Public Radio's All Things Considered and Public Radio International's This American Life; magazine articles originally published in Harper's and Esquire; and a narrative detailing Carrier's obsessive attempts to literally run down a pronghorn antelope. As with all anthologies, some pieces are more successful than others. The best story, "The Test," chronicles a temp job in which Carrier interviewed people on Medicaid support for schizophrenia, taking the agonizing responses and reducing them to statistics and cold data; in the piece's shattering climax, Carrier turns inward and forces himself to answer the same questions. Other stories focus on Carrier's rough-and-tumble encounters with memorable, oddball characters like his brother (a vertebrate morphologist who collected roadkill in the name of science) or the fundamentalist carpenters of "Windfall" (who were obsessed with Star Trek, the Trilateral Commission and Ted Kennedy). The least effective parts are Carrier's experiments as a foreign correspondent in Kashmir, Cambodia, and Chiapas, Mexico, where his touristic narratives are too thin for the gravity of the tragedies he's writing about. ("You'll never figure it out in ten days," a woman in Chiapas told him angrily. "It's pretty arrogant and stupid to even think you could.") The rest of the book, however, is more perceptive and honest, as well as funny.

I liked the voice. It made me look up his stories on the NPR website so I could hear him as well as read him. It was our book group selection and we had plenty to talk about.

I can't believe how early it gets dark out. This is going to be a long winter.

ten things tuesday...

Ten random things I'm thinking about:

1) My period 6 class was really horrible for the substitute yesterday. I hate that. Talk about taking advantage.

2) A lot of kids told me they missed me. That makes me happy.

3) I have finally broken in this pair of Clarks shoes. It's only taken two years. Granted, I don't wear them all that often but now that they are comfortable I will wear them more often.

4) I need someone to cook for me. Seriously. The past few times I've gone out to eat have been divine.

5) So sleepy last night that I went to bed at 7, asleep by 8! Egads! I forgot to set my alarm but I woke up at my regular time so all was good.

6) I voted today. Nothing too interesting on the docket.

7)

8. I think I'm going to download a couple of albums.

9. I hate waiting for the phone to ring, yet here I sit, waiting.

10. A massage would be nice.

One of the reasons I like reading historical fiction is that it takes some nugget of fact and fleshes it out with a story. This book is set on the cusp of the Civil War when the issue of slaves as property was ripe. Located in Ohio, Tawawa House is an idyllic retreat for Southern white men who vacation there every summer with their enslaved black mistresses.

The four women featured in this book have varying understanding of the relationships they have with their masters. It's also the story of friendship and how these women blossom in their friendships, even though they only have contact with each other at the summer resort. The reader can see the boundaries separating the characters even when the characters cannot.

A very good book.

friends...

Today I got together with a friend I haven't seen in twenty-seven years but reconnected with through the magic of Facebook. She and my best friend and I went to an early dinner then sat at a local coffee hang out for a long time talking. The years melted away. And I am so glad to reconnect. But it reaffirmed my friendship with my bestie. We had a level of comfort that I hope rubbed off on the long-lost friend.

Academia, travel, and mental health are all characters, as fleshed out as Madeleine, Mitchell, and Leonard. The book is a meditation on looking back at your life and wondering how you got here. At first I didn't connect with the main characters but by the end of the book I was in complete agreement with their actions and motivations. Although it is a classic love triangle, Eugenides plays with the marriage plot and gives it a modern twist.

This is a literary novel. I loved it.

thursday bug

Sometimes it helps to share with others what bugs your mind.
They may have a solution, a kind word, or a smile of encouragement.
This week my thursday bug is:

An exhausting day with wired students.

ten things tuesday...

Ten things that begin with the letter H:

1)

2) Hippos. One of my animal totems--the hippo is a source of power: Hippopotamus lives in Water, the ancient realm of birth, power, creation, imagination, and healing. Hippopotamus brings an awakening of our higher sensibilities. It enables lucid dreaming and spirit contact. Hippopotamus is a link to the spiritual, artistic and healing realms of water. It teaches you how to be strong in all of them. Learning to control powerful creative energies is the lesson that Hippopotamus gives you.

3) How I Met Your Mother

4) I'm a bit vain about my hair. It's really soft.

5) Halloween. It's just fun. Especially when little kids get all dressed up.

6) The Holiday Season. Best time of the year--festive music, lots of colored lights, and a spirit of giving.

7) Home. It's my haven.

8) Hamburgers. Yum.

9) Handbags. I love my Miche Bag.

10) Holding hands.
