This week’s random question: Name a book that disappointed you.

I was disappointed in Jonathan Franzen's Purity. Although it was wonderfully written, there were editorial choices I didn't agree with, that detracted from my enjoyment of the novel. I still can't decide if I liked the book.

    just finished

The fourth and final installment of the Raven Cycle.

    Series recap:
If you're unfamiliar with the series, here's a quick rundown of the plot: The Raven Cycle follows four teenage boys from the prestigious Aglionby Academy in Virginia: Richard Gansey III, Ronan Lynch, Adam Parrish, and Noah Czerny. After being killed in a bee attack (and brought back to life) as a child, Gansey has been on an unstoppable mission to uncover the truth behind Virginia's mysterious "ley lines" and the secret of the ancient Welsh king, Glendower, whom he believes is buried somewhere on the ley lines. His search for Glendower accelerates when he meets Blue, a townie from a family of psychics. Since birth, Blue's fate has been written in the stars: if she ever kisses her one true love, he will die. Thus, she avoids boys — especially Aglionby boys. But when she meets Gansey and his friends, she gets sucked into their search — and she finds herself falling a little bit in love with them all. Despite her growing love for the Raven Boys, she cannot forget one simple truth: her psychic family predicts that Gansey will die before the next St. Mark's Eve.
    h/t: Bustle

I suppose part of my love of this series has been listening to the audio version with the incredible performance by Will Patton. He is a gifted narrator. I will miss this magical, fantasy world and this cast of characters. After four books, I feel as though they are my friends, almost. It's the same fond feeling I get with some of my students--I wish our relationship would last outside the parameters of the classroom (and in this case outside their fictional world).

One thing I didn't like is how some characters are developed for the sake of developing characters. They don't serve to move the plot along and make random appearances throughout the series.

Other than that, I will definitely read more by this author.

    green

I was driving to school this morning, admiring all the shades of green from the variety of blooming and blossoming trees, fields, and plants. Shades of green as far as the eye can see. I wanted to take a photo, but I couldn't capture the subtle differences and all the hues. I forget that not everyone sees what I see every day.

    Nature’s first green is gold,
    Her hardest hue to hold.
    Her early leaf’s a flower;
    But only so an hour.
    Then leaf subsides to leaf.
    So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
    Nothing gold can stay.
    ~Thank you, Robert Frost!

    What Hurts the Most

    1) What hurts Sam the most is her sole, since she just found that earring she thought was lost by stepping on it with her bare foot. How about you? Any aches and pains to report? my body is still achy from hiking all over Quebec City. Good aches, but aches.

    2) What's the last thing you misplaced? Did you find it? a paper that a student passed in, yes, I eventually found it

    4) Gary auditioned for another country group, Little Big Town, but didn't get in. Considering how successful Rascal Flatts has been, he's probably not sorry. Tell us about something you thought you wanted, but later weren't so sure. I always thought I wanted to teach in my hometown but now I'm glad I'm in the neighboring town

    5) The country group has their roots in Columbus, Ohio. What else is Ohio known for? Ohio is the birthplace of 7 presidents! (I knew that without looking it up)

    6) Lead guitarist Joe Don Rooney married model and former Miss Georgia, Tiffany Fallon. Many major pageants give prizes in the talent, congeniality and swimsuit competitions. Would you prefer to have exceptional skills, a great personality, or a terrific body? exceptional skills

    7) 2006, the year this song was popular, was a very good one for tennis pro Roger Federer. He reached the finals in all four Grand Slam tournaments, and won three. What's the last game you won? (Yes, Words with Friends counts.) I won a scavenger hunt on the Quebec trip

    8) Actor Tony Shalhoub won an Emmy in 2006 for his portrayal of detective Adrian Monk on Monk. Who's your favorite TV detective? Jim Rockford

    9) Random question ... You've just won an all-expenses-paid trip but now you have to choose: Carnivale in Brazil, the Bordeaux Wine Festival in France, or the Running of the Bulls in Spain? A quirky, quirky novel.

    From the publisher:
Reclusive literary legend M. M. “Mimi” Banning has been holed up in her Bel Air mansion for years. But after falling prey to a Bernie Madoff-style ponzi scheme, she’s flat broke. Now Mimi must write a new book for the first time in decades, and to ensure the timely delivery of her manuscript, her New York publisher sends an assistant to monitor her progress. The prickly Mimi reluctantly complies—with a few stipulations: No Ivy-Leaguers or English majors. Must drive, cook, tidy. Computer whiz. Good with kids. Quiet, discreet, sane.

When Alice Whitley arrives at the Banning mansion, she’s put to work right away—as a full-time companion to Frank, the writer’s eccentric nine-year-old, a boy with the wit of Noel Coward, the wardrobe of a 1930s movie star, and very little in common with his fellow fourth-graders.

As she slowly gets to know Frank, Alice becomes consumed with finding out who Frank’s father is, how his gorgeous “piano teacher and itinerant male role model” Xander fits into the Banning family equation—and whether Mimi will ever finish that book.

Sometimes I go through my Nook and "archive" books that I have read and probably won't read again. But when I got my new Nook, I unarchived everything so I could make sure all of my books are downloaded onto the device. It's insanity that I have around 600 books on the device. More than a third have been read.

This book is a fun escape--a heist story, and I love those!
    From the publisher:
A career criminal with OCD tendencies and a savant-like genius for bringing order to his crime scenes, Martin considers himself one of the best in the biz. After all, he’s been able to steal from the same people for years on end—virtually undetected. Of course, this could also be attributed to his unique business model—he takes only items that will go unnoticed by the homeowner. After all, who in their right mind would miss a roll of toilet paper here, a half-used bottle of maple syrup there, or even a rarely used piece of china buried deep within a dusty cabinet?

Even though he's never met these homeowners, he's spent hours in their houses, looking through their photo albums and reading their journals. In essence, Martin has developed a friendship of sorts with them and as such, he decides to interfere more in their lives—playing the part of a rather odd guardian angel—even though it means breaking many of his twitchy neurotic rules.

Along the way Martin not only improves the lives of others, but he also discovers love and finds that his own life is much better lived on the edge (at least some of the time) in this hilarious, suspenseful and often profound novel about a man used to planning every second of his life, suddenly forced to confront chaos and spontaneity.

    round is a shape

Nothing reminds me that I am out of shape more than this trip has. The first day we walked 7 miles around the city, up hills and stairs. Actually, I took a taxi back to the hotel because I knew I would be way behind the group. So I probably only hiked around 5 miles. But going from no miles to many miles is a shock to the system. My legs and feet cramped something fierce, but the second day I managed to keep up with the group. Today it was hard to get my shoes on, not only the bending, but the swollen feet. I'm so glad I've been wearing my walking sneakers all trip.

We have some free time and I opted to hang out in the lobby.

It's been an amazing trip. Weather aside, we've had incredible food and an amazing tour guide!  That's made the trip educational and fun.

I had forgotten how much there is to do here. It's been about twenty years or so since I was here last. The charm and elegance hasn't changed.

I'm not really sure what I think about this book. I mean, Franzen is a truly great writer. I didn't connect to the characters and kind of didn't care for much of what happened to them. The wonderful writing kept me turning pages, though. A couple of the characters were so over-the-top in their character that it was too too. Yaknow? I didn't love it but I also didn't hate it.

    From the publisher:
Young Pip Tyler doesn't know who she is. She knows that her real name is Purity, that she's saddled with $130,000 in student debt, that she's squatting with anarchists in Oakland, and that her relationship with her mother--her only family--is hazardous. But she doesn't have a clue who her father is, why her mother chose to live as a recluse with an invented name, or how she'll ever have a normal life.

Enter the Germans. A glancing encounter with a German peace activist leads Pip to an internship in South America with The Sunlight Project, an organization that traffics in all the secrets of the world--including, Pip hopes, the secret of her origins. TSP is the brainchild of Andreas Wolf, a charismatic provocateur who rose to fame in the chaos following the fall of the Berlin Wall. Now on the lam in Bolivia, Andreas is drawn to Pip for reasons she doesn't understand, and the intensity of her response to him upends her conventional ideas of right and wrong.

    2) Contract negotiations are going well and it looks like we will finish up tomorrow night, then begins the ratification process. I'm pleased.

    3) I'm heading off to a workshop tomorrow and getting ready for a substitute is way more work than being here myself.

    4) Yesterday we awoke to snow. Tomorrow is supposed to be in the upper 70s.

    5) I'm just about to finish the Franzen book Purity. I haven't decided if I like the story, although I appreciate how beautifully written the book is. I haven't connected with any of the characters but I'm compelled to read what's happening.

    6) I'm going to try listening to podcasts. Any suggestions?

    7) We still don't have a finalized schedule for final exams and they're less than a month away. I hate not knowing how to plan for the end of the semester/year.

    8) In that vein, I still don't have any idea what my schedule for next year will look like. I've been asked to have a student teacher, but depending on how many Advanced Placement classes I have (a minimum of two), it depends, because student teachers aren't allowed to teach Advanced Placement courses.

    9) I think spring fever has hit my classes. The kids are overly restless and wound up.

    10) I started knitting a blanket for my next great nephew. Due in the end of June.

This week’s random question: What is the best book you read LAST year?

The 5 out of 5 star books I read last year: Career of Evil by Robert Galbraith (JK Rowling)--a very dark installment of the series. Dumplin by Julie Murphy--a YA that's not just for YA--body image, friendship, and growing pains; with a side dose of Dolly Parton.
