From the publisher:
Evie Rosen has had enough. She's tired of the partners at her law firm e-mailing her at all hours of the night. The thought of another online date makes her break out in a cold sweat. She's over the clever hashtags and the endless selfies. So when her career hits a surprising roadblock and her heart is crushed by Facebook, Evie decides it's time to put down her smartphone for good. (Beats stowing it in her underwear—she's done that too!)

And that's when she discovers a fresh start for real conversations, fewer distractions, and living in the moment, even if the moments are heartbreakingly difficult. Babies are born; marriages teeter; friendships are tested. Evie just may find love and a new direction when she least expects it, but she also learns that just because you unplug your phone doesn't mean you can unplug from life.

I was afraid that this would turn into a whine-athon of a book, where the main character woes and groans about their shitty plot in life and so forth, but I liked how Evie worked through the situations that she found herself in. Some of the secondary characters could have used a bit more development, like her crazy friends, but others seemed real--like Bette and Jack. Edward was a little too good to be true, but he made my heart pitter-pat for him.

A fun, light chick-lit rom-com. Just what I was in the mood for!

happy day 29

Day 29: So many happy events today: breakfast with The Breakfast Club, a really cool manicure using colors from the OPI Venice collection, bumping into dear old friends at the grocery store, visiting with my parents--and laughing so hard, and a chat with my Virginia niece. Plus a delicious nap!

saturday 9

Viva la Vida

1) The song refers to the singing of choirs. Have you ever been in a choir or a vocal group? for most of my life I have belonged to a choir or vocal group. This past ten years has been hit or miss, because of my school schedule

2) Chris Martin sings of when he "ruled the world." If you were in charge and had infinite power, what would you change right away? I would heal the ills of the world

3) Chris used to be married to actress Gwyneth Paltrow. USA Today, The Washington Post and The Daily Telegraph have all run articles about how Gwyneth seems to annoy so very many people. What celebrity gets on your nerves? any of the celebutants (those who are famous for being famous)

4) Coldplay's first big hit was, "Yellow." What color are you wearing right now? my shirt is multi-colored

5) Sam remembers when she used to hear this song everywhere and can't believe that was 7 years ago! When is the last time you had a similar "my, how time flies!" moment? I helped my niece move into her Freshman dorm at college--wow!

6) In 2008, when "Viva la Vida" was popular, John Grisham's latest legal thriller, The Appeal, was jumping off bookshelves. What have you read this summer? I was a busy reader this summer: The Curvy Girls Club, The Little Paris Bookshop, All the Bright Places, The Paying Guests, Scents and Sensibility, The Kidney Hypothetical, Geek Girl, Murder on a Girls' Night Out, The Book of Speculation, Chose The Wrong Guy Gave Him The Wrong Finger, The Rocks, Paper Towns, The Crime of Julian Wells, As You Wish, Eight Hundred Grapes, Drums Girls and Dangerous Pie, The Bone Clocks, and Eeny Meeny!

7) Thinking of books: Let's say a biographer has taken the task of writing your biography. What would you title your life story? What if this is as good as it gets?

8) 2008 is also the year Paul Newman died of cancer. Name a Newman movie. Nobody's Fool

9) Random question: Do you like garlic? I like it but it doesn't like me!

happy day 28

Day 28: I took my niece Rachel to move into her Freshman dorm today. We spend so much time together, this is going to be a big adjustment for both of us! I'm happy that the trip (roughly 5.5 hours in the car) was uneventful.

Do you like to read books about far-away places? Travel guides, memoirs, whatever? Places you’ve been? Or places you’ve never been? .

I love reading about places I have been to or may go to. I feel guilty putting this out there but I don't enjoy books set in the middle east or Asia. I love books set in Australia, Africa, Canada, Mexico, South America, and Europe. I've only read travel guides for places I had planned travel excursions to, but I love the Lonely Planet website. I have read quite a few travel memoirs and enjoyed them--especially when there was a huge adventure involved. I love novels where the setting is as much a character as any of the people in the book!

4) Pinterest. I wish I could get Professional Development credit for the hours I spend investigating sites and sources I find there.

5) Facebook. Chatting with my sisters and their kids is the best part of Facebook!

6) Netflix. What's not to love??

7) Goodreads. Tracking my reading progress is helpful and motivating. I love hearing about new books and making book friends.

8) Twitter. The educational chats are inspiring. And the snarky stuff is hilarious.

10) YouTube. So many amazing (and weird) videos out there! I've learned a lot about knitting, computing, and have discovered some clever videos for my classroom.

Some real LOL moments and some exploration of how we judge each others' appearance.

From the publisher:
Where Confidence is the New Black. Fed up with always struggling to lose weight, best friends Katie, Ellie, Pixie and Jane start a social club where size doesn't matter. It soon grows into London's most popular club - a place to have fun instead of counting carbs - and the women find their lives changing in ways they never imagined. But outside the club, life isn't as rosy.

just read...

What a charming book! It delighted me.

From the publisher:
“There are books that are suitable for a million people, others for only a hundred. There are even remedies—I mean books—that were written for one person only…A book is both medic and medicine at once. It makes a diagnosis as well as offering therapy. Putting the right novels to the appropriate ailments: that’s how I sell books.”

Monsieur Perdu calls himself a literary apothecary. From his floating bookstore in a barge on the Seine, he prescribes novels for the hardships of life. Using his intuitive feel for the exact book a reader needs, Perdu mends broken hearts and souls. The only person he can't seem to heal through literature is himself; he's still haunted by heartbreak after his great love disappeared. She left him with only a letter, which he has never opened.

After Perdu is finally tempted to read the letter, he hauls anchor and departs on a mission to the south of France, hoping to make peace with his loss and discover the end of the story. Joined by a bestselling but blocked author and a lovelorn Italian chef, Perdu travels along the country’s rivers, dispensing his wisdom and his books, showing that the literary world can take the human soul on a journey to heal itself.

So many solid characters, such lush descriptions of the French countryside, and a love of books! I can't wait to talk about it with my Library book group.

Day 22:

saturday 9

Hello, Dolly

1) This song is about a woman returning to the town where she was happiest. How many towns have you lived in? 2 towns 1 city

2) Crazy Sam played Ernestina in her high school production of Hello, Dolly! and still remembers one of her lines: "Hey, you with the big ears! What are you doing after the show?" Tell us something that you memorized for school that is still rattling around in your brain. One hen, two ducks, three squawking geese, four Limerick oysters, five corpulent porpoises, six pairs of Don Alverzo's tweezers, seven thousand Macedonians in full battle array, eight brass monkeys from the ancient, sacred crypts of Egypt, nine apathetic, sympathetic, diabetic old men on roller skates with a marked propensity towards procrastination and sloth, ten lyrical, spherical, diabolical denizens of the deep who haul stall around the corner of the quo of the quay of the quivery, all at the same time. (The announcer's test)

3) This week's featured artist, Louis Armstrong, got his start entertaining diners on riverboat dinner cruises. Have you ever taken a dinner cruise? I went on a sunset booze cruise but don't remember much!

4) Armstrong took his nickname, "Satchmo," from "Satchel Mouth" -- a slang term for someone with a wide mouth, which Louis believed was his most distinguishing feature. What do you think people notice first about you? I have no idea

5) In 1936, Louis became the first African American to get featured billing in a Hollywood movie. Have you seen any of this summer's big movies? I saw Inside Out

6) When "Hello, Dolly" composer Jerry was growing up, he was close to an aunt named Belle who encouraged his love of music. Tell us about one of your aunts or uncles. My godmother never forgot me on my birthday or Christmas, she was a constant presence

7) Though famous for composing the scores of Hello, Dolly!, Mame and La Cage Aux Folles, Jerry Herman can't read music. Can you? sort of

8) Now retired, Mr. Herman lives in Miami. This is Miami's "wet season," which lasts into October. When did it last rain where you are? we had some incredible thunder last night, with a nice rain storm

9) Random question: Have you suffered a sunburn this summer? I have not!

What was the most emotional read you have ever had? From the archives.

A couple of books stand out--I had visceral reactions to them: The Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova, The Cormoran Strike novels by Robert Galbraith which kept me up at night, another is the book I am eagerly anticipating the sequel to--Jojo Moyes' Me Before You, and lastly, a recent read that had me laughing and crying: Jennifer Niven's All The Bright Places.

Day 18: It was above 90 degrees in my classroom today, and I had fans blasting. It was a workshop day and I didn't go home between the workshop session and the Freshman orientation. My sandwich is sitting like a lump in my stomach. I'm drenched with sweat, I'm smelly. It's starting to thunder. Tomorrow is the first day of school with students and it's expected to be hot again.

So, what makes me happy? Not much today, I'm afraid. I'm tired, grumpy, tired of people, my ankles and feet are swollen, I'm sticky from sweating, smelly, and my tummy hurts. But thinking of this challenge has brightened my mood. So cheers for being happy in August!

ten things tuesday

Linking up with Ten On Tuesday this week.

1) It's currently 89 degrees outside and humid, add about 10-15 degrees for being on the second floor of this old school building in a south-facing corner room; so I'm going to say 70 degree weather makes me happy.

2) Dunkin' Donuts iced coffee makes me happy.

3) Crisp bacon on a BLT makes me happy. Well, it doesn't have to be on a BLT, just crisp bacon...

4) Great sing-a-long music makes me happy. Currently, I'm listening to the iTunes Radio station Cocktails & Crooners. Lots of Rat Pack.

5) Clean laundry makes me happy.

6) WiFi internet makes me happy.

7) Laughing about nothing makes me happy.

8) Hugs make me happy.

Day 15: A relaxing and colorful mani/pedi!

finished reading

I laughed and cried with this book. As someone who struggles with mental illness--Dysthymia and OCD--I would say this book is intense; it is more about the aftermath of accidental death and suicide. So, although I love the book, I caution those who might be sensitive to the themes.

From the publisher:
Theodore Finch is fascinated by death, and he constantly thinks of ways he might kill himself. But each time, something good, no matter how small, stops him.

Violet Markey lives for the future, counting the days until graduation, when she can escape her Indiana town and her aching grief in the wake of her sister’s recent death.

When Finch and Violet meet on the ledge of the bell tower at school, it’s unclear who saves whom. And when they pair up on a project to discover the “natural wonders” of their state, both Finch and Violet make more important discoveries: It’s only with Violet that Finch can be himself—a weird, funny, live-out-loud guy who’s not such a freak after all. And it’s only with Finch that Violet can forget to count away the days and start living them. But as Violet’s world grows, Finch’s begins to shrink.

This is an intense, gripping novel.

Both lead characters, Finch and Violet, are wonderfully crafted. Secondary characters are realistic, too, especially the high schoolers. The parents are somewhat cliche, but I expected that. I couldn't put it down.

saturday 9

Stay With Me

1) Sam Smith explains that this song is about just not wanting to wake up alone. How about you? Are you comfortable being by yourself? I am

2) Last year a lawsuit filed by Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne, who maintained that "Stay with Me" was really just "I Won't Back Down." Petty and Lynne won. Have you ever served on a jury? I have not

3) Smith performed this on The David Letterman Show. Did you watch Dave's final episode last May? I have it recorded but haven't watched it yet

4) Smith says his style was influenced by ladies with "massive voices," including Adele, Amy Winehouse, Chaka Kahn, and Whitney Houston. Of those four, which do you listen to most often? lately it's been Chaka Kahn

5) Speaking of style, Mr. Smith is a smart dressed man who looks comfortable and dapper as he walks the red carpet in a tux. Do you enjoy getting dressed up for special occasions? not particularly

6) "Occasions" is a word that makes Crazy Sam stumble because she can never remember how to spell it correctly. Are you a good speller? usually

7) Sam Smith was born on May 19, which makes him a Taurus. When did you last check your horoscope? yesterday

8) Tauruses are supposed to be reliable, organized and ambitious. Do any of those three adjectives describe you? organized

9) Random question: Look at the floor. Do you see carpet, rug, hard wood or tile? carpet--in desperate need of vacuuming!

What’s the most intriguing book you ever read? Something that made you think, explore new ideas, or just be really impressed and awed and amazed at the sheer wonder of the creativity of the thing? .

Definitely the Harry Potter series. Actually, quite a few Stephen King books--especially 11/22/63 and On Writing. In 2011, I read The Swan Thieves and I still think about it often.
