And, honestly, I don't quite know what to say about it. Parts were heartbreaking and parts were heart pounding.

Great information about Memorial Day from the History Channel here. And a very interesting article about WWI Doughboys from CNN here.

hate to admit...

But I've been really, incredibly lazy this weekend. I've planted my ass down in the comfy chair and have been hanging around either reading or watching t.v. Although, I did get all my errands run yesterday and today I did laundry. But I haven't done anything fun or interesting at all this weekend. Maybe tomorrow will be more active--I am having a pedicure and then it's Dad's birthday party.

Lazy, lazy me...

just finished reading...

The third installment is as much fun as the first two in the series. All the characters are true to form and the story is fast-paced and satisfying.

I say... and you think...?

1. Lisa :: Simpsons
2. Hope :: belief
3. Irene :: Good night
4. Tony :: Anthony
5. Anna :: and the King of Siam
6. Dolly :: Hello
7. Laura :: Ingalls Wilder
8. Debbie :: Deb
9. Wilson :: Volleyball
10. Paula :: Hey, hey...

idol chatter...

Although I think I like Kris better, Adam will probably win. Adam is a better performer.

ten things tuesday...

Ten things I'm not so good at:

1) Tell jokes. I always mess up the punch line and get lost in the middle.

2) Math. Not my strongest subject during school or beyond.

3) Juggle. I've never been able to master juggling. I just couldn't get the hang of it.

4) Knit. I've had friends trying to teach me how to knit but I can't get the hang of the different stitches.

5) Putting stuff away. I don't like putting clean dishes or clean laundry away. I don't really have a reason, I just don't like doing it.

6) Ask for help. It takes a lot and I generally get very nervous.

7) Draw. I am not artistically talented although I appreciate art.

8) Put down books I don't enjoy reading. Something drives me to finish the book, even if I really don't like it.

9) Scrabble. Just can't play.

10) Run. I've never been a runner, I just can't seem to get a rhythm.

5.18.2009

nice to be home...

Great trip--well worth my aching ass. This year we were assigned workshops to attend instead of choosing our own so it was a big surprise to see what the offerings were. The first one was about media & sexuality--stereotyping and so forth. Nothing groundbreaking there. The second workshop was about the new Mainers, how immigrants and refugees are changing Maine. The students went to all sorts of other workshops and were raving about them, so it was a successful day. I will write more later...

I am completely exhausted. Some of the girls were silly and stayed up until 2:30 but overall they weren't too bad.

just another manic monday...

If you could completely redecorate any room in your house at no expense to you, what room would you choose? oh, oh, oh, that this was true! I'd redo the living room

Which hour of the day do you feel goes the slowest? the hour with my most challenging students...bah

If your birthday could be in a different month of the year, when would you have it? it would have to be in November so I can remain a Scorpio

5.17.2009

heading out...

Heading out in moments for a school bus ride to the state's civil rights team convention. It'll be a long ride and a nervous night at the hotel (I always worry when I'm chaperoning high school kids) but an excellent convention.

Sorry I'm not blog hopping as I usually do... I'll be back Monday night sometime.

i say... and you think...?

The Source Of Inspiration

Scorpio Daily Horoscope

A conversational mood can prompt you to seek out opportunities to share your thoughts and feelings with like-minded, open individuals today. This can mean engaging a colleague in a discussion focused on matters pertaining to your work or seeking out an experienced teacher in order to learn from them through dialogue. If you are free with your own ideas today, you will likely discover that what began as a simple chat becomes a stimulating session of brainstorming. Making the most of such a session can be as simple as taking all you have heard and mulling it over at a later date.

The ideas others put forth when communicating with us can become the seeds that blossom into entirely new and refined notions in the wonderful incubator that is the mind. These unformed notions help us see the first step in a progression of thought, but it is our mental faculties that enable us to move from step to step. All we need to do to accomplish this is to mull over thoughts and opinions that intrigue us. As we add our own point of view to these, they are irrevocably changed—becoming something entirely new. This fresh idea is now our brainchild and the product of our intellect, and we should feel free to use it in any manner we see fit, from sharing it with the source of our inspiration to turning it in to a personal or professional project. By simply talking with others today, you can plant the seeds of wonderful notions in your own mind.

idol chatter...

Those of you who read my blog regularly know that One, by U2, is my very favorite song ever. To have Adam sing it as the judges' choice made me nervous. Gotta say I didn't love it. I'm a little disappointed, I thought Adam would blow me away. I'm liked the contestant choices. Kris was brave with his version of Heartless, I liked it a lot. Not thrilled with Danny, he was just alright. And Adam didn't wow me.

I still don't have a favorite.

hello, handsome...

ten things tuesday...

Ten things I'm good at:

1) Listening. I'm a patient listener and have learned that in my profession all the students really want is to be heard. Unless they're talking about dirt bikes. Then I tune out.

2) Baking. I'm a great baker and a pretty good cook. I just don't do either anymore. One day I'll pick up my wooden spoons again, I'm sure. But for now, it seems like too much bother.

3) Teamwork. I love being part of a team, to collaborate and contribute.

4) Cheering up. Nothing makes me happier than knowing I've helped someone through a difficult time.

5) Shopping. I've always wanted to be a personal shopper. I'm great at finding the right things for the right people.

6) Reading. I love reading anything and everything.

7) Color coordinating. It's like a gift or something. But I can match up colors like nobody's business. Well, maybe it is somebody's business, but I'm really good at it.

8) Processing. I shine when we are breaking tasks down or when we are creating plans and formulas.

9) Writing. I have school-teachery handwriting. Nice block letters, clear script and I can write without going uphill even without lines.

10) Decompressing. There are several tricks I've learned. Some of them incorporate distraction, some are counting (counting to ten really works for me at school), and some are breathing. But I can veg out with the best of them.

Lego sunglasses let you build your own fashion

Legos are maybe the world's best toy, what with them allowing kids to build whatever they want to play with that day. So why not bring them into more everyday objects? These sunglasses do just that.

Lego teamed up with French optical company Lynx Optique to create these sweet Lego sunglasses that feature Lego bricks on the sides. In theory, you could build whatever you want on them depending on your mood. Designing your own fashion just like designing your own toys. We need this Lego sensibility in more places.

Maine Affirms Right Of Gays, Lesbians To Marry

By Brian Beutler - May 6, 2009, 1:01PM

John Baldacci, the Governor of Maine, has signed a law legalizing gay marriage.

"I have followed closely the debate on this issue," Baldacci said. "I have listened to both sides, as they have presented their arguments during the public hearing and on the floor of the Maine Senate and the House of Representatives. I have read many of the notes and letters sent to my office, and I have weighed my decision carefully. I did not come to this decision lightly or in haste."

The move represents a change in the governor's thinking. "In the past, I opposed gay marriage while supporting the idea of civil unions," Baldacci said. "I have come to believe that this is a question of fairness and of equal protection under the law, and that a civil union is not equal to civil marriage."

The new law also affirms that no particular church has to recognize a marriage that does not conform to its beliefs, and that no church is required to perform same-sex marriage ceremonies.

Baldacci is the first governor to sign a same-sex marriage bill in absence of a preceding court decision, though there were other pressures. In late 2008, the Maine Marriage Alliance announced it would lead an effort to pass an amendment to the Maine Constitution that defined marriage as between a man and a woman.

I still don't have a favorite. The duets--an interesting twist but just filler, really. Kris isn't drrty enough for rock, I'm afraid. And what happened to that last note with Danny Gokey. Yikes!

Overall the night didn't leave me thrilled. Adam shouldn't have been first. No one was even close to him tonight. I'm guessing this was Allison's last week, she should have owned this week.

ten things tuesday...

Ten random things:

1) Therapy is fascinating and challenging. Working on some baby steps to make some really big and important changes.

2) It breaks my heart that there are children being bullied to death. Literally to death. Oprah's on it tomorrow. This must stop. I am working on it at my school.

3) Hiccups are not fun. Especially after an hour.

4) Faculty meetings can get people stirred up. A real hot button issue came up yesterday and was still all the buzz today. We're talking about test re-takes. And my contribution to the whole discussion was to ask the students what would work for them. They probably have some good ideas.

5) Looks like I'm going to be teaching sophomores again next year. The only change is when the classes are. It was too much to hope for the same schedule. meh.

6) I need to have a good cry. You know when you get that feeling, like all my feelings are clogged? Well, maybe you don't know... but that happens to me sometimes.

7) I had a flash of inspiration today and am really excited about teaching Plessy v. Ferguson to my honors class. The overriding concept is does equal treatment mean the same treatment. And I've got some examples all picked out for them. wheeee!

8) It's Teacher Appreciation Week and there's no love comin' my way. Remember last year I got a beautiful bouquet of flowers??

9) I love sign language. ;-)

10) I drink a lot of water.

Yesterday I had the pleasure of explaining: "stay home if you're sick," and "cover your (damn) mouth if you cough," as well as reminding them to sing the ABC's twice while scrubbing their hands. In the middle of my spiel, I coughed into my hands and had to go wash them. That's the protocol.

The good news is that should the H1N1 hit our region, we won't have to make up the days we miss. The bad news is that the rumor mill is in wild overdrive. Every sniffle has some of the kids hyper-alarmed. And let me be clear--they're not alarmed of the risk, they want a week off!

A romantic comedy novel. Very enjoyable although the characters could use a bit more development. The author also wrote Must Love Dogs, so you get the idea. It was great after a heavier book. A definite beach blanket book. I know, I know, it's not beach season yet.
