I'm so glad you enjoyed My Lovely Wife. It was such good, twisted fun. SPOILER ALERT for anyone who hasn't read it yet: I just wish the Owen subplot had been handled differently. There is NO WAY Owen could have just disappeared without some sharp reporter tracking him down. The family still had friends in town and somebody would have (intentionally or not) given something away. And Celeste's relationship with him would have been revealed, either to the press or the police. I base this on Richard Speck and John Wayne Gacy, two of Chicagoland's most infamous. I actually know someone who only met Gacy ONCE and was questioned by the police. When a case gets the level of scrutiny Ms. Downing described, nothing stays secret. Ever. Which is not to say I didn't like the book. I did!
I'm sending my most prickly aunt the first Gamache book for her birthday. She loves mysteries, but she's going through a period where everything seems to offend her. I thought even she will love this book. Gamache is thoroughly decent, the crime isn't too violent, the setting is so attractive and peaceful. Hopefully she'll like it. I think she needs a little more happiness in her life.
