Today was parent teacher conferences. What an incredibly long day. This is worse than teaching, for sure. From 12:30 until 8, with a half-hour for supper, I had twenty-one conferences. That's about one-third what I traditionally have. It was hours of just sitting around, not doing anything.
Now, not doing anything isn't really my style. But, I don't have lesson plans to make because of the student teacher. I have no correcting to do because of the student teacher. No bulletin board to put together, again, because of the student teacher. Just hours of sitting around. I tried to read. Really, I tried. But every time I would get going, the student teacher would start talking to me and I just couldn't get into the book.
At around 5:30, I finally told the student teacher to go home. She had already commented that she didn't think she would learn anything from watching my conferences, even though I specifically told her how I structure them and what the typical procedure is. The nerve. ;-)
They went well, though, even though only about three of them were helpful. The rest were ego strokes--"oh, so and so is doing well in class"--that kind of thing. (although I would never actually say that, you get the idea)
One couple said they can see why their kid loves my class because I'm so charming. That was nice.
Now it's off to sleep. And a workshop day tomorrow.

Sitting around waiting can be a drag, but I liked the pay-off at the end, when you found how nice one of your students is about you behind your back. Bet you liked it, too.
Sleep well. It sounds as though you've earned it...
