This mystery is set on a tiny, isolated Scottish island, offering an atmospheric reading experience. The setting itself is a character, with its small community where everyone knows everyone's business, creating a claustrophobic yet intriguing backdrop. The sense of isolation and the pervasive gossip add a rich layer to the story's overall mood.

The novel excels in its pacing and suspense. The dual narrative structure, which alternates between Grady's current experiences and Abby's flashbacks, is particularly effective. It builds tension and keeps you guessing, making it hard to put the book down. The peek into the writing and publishing world is also a fascinating bonus, offering a glimpse into a typically unseen industry. However, the true standout is Colombo, the dog. Easily the most lovable character, Colombo brings a touch of normalcy, warmth, and charm to the narrative.

Unfortunately, the main characters, Grady and Abby, are a significant weakness. It's difficult to form a connection with either of them, and their decisions throughout the story are often frustrating and illogical. Additionally, several secondary plotlines feel distracting and are ultimately left unresolved, which detracts from the main mystery. The ending, without giving anything away, may leave some readers feeling disappointed.

Ultimately, while the book's setting, pacing, and lovable canine character make for a compelling read, the unlikable protagonists and loose ends keep it from being a truly thrilling mystery.

From the publisher:
