Trapped in a room

1. If you were trapped in a room with the person who asked this for 24 hours, what would you do? The answer cannot be romantic or sexual.  Well, it would be with me since I'm filling in for the regular host, Bev--I'd probably read or knit or noodle around on the internet

2. If you could learn any language instantly, what would it be? Italian

3. If you could only read one book for the rest of your life, what would it be? hmmm I'm not sure

4. Favorite song lyric?
There will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Yeah there will be an answer, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

5. Favorite album? Achtung Baby by U2

6. Which time of day would you say is best for you work-wise? mid-morning

7. What do you think people assume about you from first glance? one of my students thought I looked like a cat lady but she has revised her answer now that she thinks I'm a bad-butt (she didn't want to say ass)

8. Favorite city that you haven’t visited? Berlin

9. If you received $10,000 but had to give it away, what would you do with it? I would like to start a charitable foundation at school

10. What is one book you wish you could get all your friends to read? I would give them a title based on genre--but my favorite book this year has been Maggie O'Farrell's Hamnet

11. What is one movie you wish you could get all your friends to watch? again, it's based on genre but I really enjoyed Four Weddings and a Funeral

12. If you could create one thing, what would it be? world peace

13. If you could play any musical instrument, what would it be? classical guitar

14. What is your favorite item of clothing? well, right now it's this t-shirt dress

15. What is your favorite card/board game? my decades-long epic grudge match of Spite & Malice

With your permission, I'd like to Beatle nerd on you. "Let it be" is what Mary McCartney would murmur to soothe her crying son. She died when he was 14. Twelve years later -- after Brian Epstein died, after Yoko arrived on the scene, when Paul had broken up with Jane Asher and was embarking on a relationship with Linda -- he dreamed of his mother soothing him with those words again. It's a more literal and more personal song than most people know and I think it's the authenticity that people respond to. His father used to tell him, "Put it there, if it weighs a ton." Meaning no matter how heavy the burden, Jim McCartney wanted to share it. I think that having two parents he loved and who loved him is how he managed to avoid the pitfalls other rockers fell victim to. Here's a link to the less known song to Jim: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cC5mW9-avbw. (And here ends today's lecture.)
