I'm reading  American Princess by Stephanie Marie Thornton.

From page 265:

We were sitting in the still-warm autumn sun in the apple orchard at Sagamore Hill, Mother dandling Ethel's baby on her knee.  My sister and her husband had volunteered to assist ambulance hospitals on the European battlefields almost the same instant as Archduke Franz Ferdinand's assassination even though it meant leaving behind their son, but we were all proud that she was doing her bit to better this great world tragedy.
