Voices Carry

This song was chosen because October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Please share this link to The National Domestic Violence Hotline. Let's spread the word that there's help out there.

1) In this song, a woman is "hushed" by her lover. When were you last told to "keep it down?" Last summer, during the family celebration, we were on the porch and were laughing uproariously and it was recommended we tone it down a decibel or two--but who can argue with laughter????

2) Her lover tells her tears are something to hide. Researchers tell us that crying can be good for us, because by releasing emotional stress, it lessens physical stress on the cardiovascular system. Are you comfortable crying in front of other people? Interesting question. I guess it would depend on what prompted me to cry, as I often cry in frustration. No, I am not comfortable crying in front of other people but it's because I don't want anyone to try to comfort me as crying is personal. Although, I am compassionate when others are crying.

3) In this video, the woman makes a scene by speaking up in a theater. Today theater goers are more likely to be disturbed by a cell phone ringing or its screen illuminating. Are you careful to turn your phone off in the theater, church, etc.? I am very conscious of turning my cell off--it's a school rule so I'm in the habit of it

4) When this group, Til Tuesday, was still struggling, Cyndi Lauper was already a star. Cyndi offered to record this song, which would have brought the group some fast cash, but only if they agreed not to record it themselves. Obviously they didn't take the deal. Tell us about a time you took a risk on yourself, and it paid off. I applied to be a Social Studies Community Teacher Leader--including submitting a CV and references and was selected! I'll post more about it at a later date when I have travel details.

5) Til Tuesday's lead singer, Aimee Mann, went to Open High School in Richmond, Virginia. This charter high school is dedicated to helping students become "self-determined thinkers and learners." Do you recall your high school as permissive or regimented? Oh, holy moly my school was Regimented!

6) Aimee has been on the road through 2017 and, like most artists, sells tour merchandise. Her line includes reusable tote bags. Do you bring your own bag to the grocery store? I do, I keep a few in the car for impromptu stops, even.

7) Aimee has tried her hand at acting and appeared on Buffy, The Vampire Slayer. From Dracula to Barnabas Collins to Lestat, vampires are a popular culture staple (especially in October). What do you suppose accounts for their enduring popularity? I don't know but I love them (heck, I even read the Twilight series!!!)

8) In 1985, when this song was popular, Bruce Springsteen was at the top of the charts with Born in the USA. A massive commercial success, Born in the USA has sold more than 15,000,000 copies in the United States alone. Is it in your collection? it is in my CD collection but not my digital collection

9) Random question: In which race would you do better -- the Iditarod, with sled dogs in Nome, or speeding in a car at 200+ mph at the Indianapolis 500? My gut reaction was the sled dogs but because I'm so chubby, I would feel guilty for the dogs hauling my fat ass, so I guess I'll go with the speeding car, even though my heart is with the sled dogs.

#4: Yea!

#9: I bet they'd love you anyway.

I say go with the sled dogs. Your fa is actually a benefit to you as it may make the sled go faster (as per a whole South Park episode...).

Your comment about it being school policy to turn phones off got me wondering....how does your school handle kids and phones? I know they aren't supposed to use them here, but from what I can tell, when they do use them nobody does anything about it. I've known several teens (including my own) who when asked to surrender their phone refused and nothing came of it.

It was just in the news this week about a teacher in Pittsburgh who took a cell phone from a child. The parents were called in to a meeting, but afterward followed the teacher and the mother attacked her face with a brick! Over a stinking phone!

Oh ya, some schools were so regimented in those days. I home schooled the twins to get them out of jr. high, and then they went to the Alternative school. An "old school" principle wanted to call me every week about "behavior". He needed a new placement. They graduated two years early with honors. Give me a break!

Awe, you'd do fine! Sled dogs carry a lot more weight that the musher. I'm sure they'd love you as you'd be so sympathetic, and give them lots of attaboys.

Oh go with the dogs, Your fat ass can't be fatter than mine.

I can cry on command and it has been helpful. It got me out of 2 moving violations and was VERY effective trying to discipline a group of kids I was supposed to be chaperoning.
