What’s the scariest book you’ve ever read?

There are a couple of Stephen King books that I would say are the scariest books I've ever read: Salem's Lot, The Shining, and It. I read Salem's Lot while at camp one summer, I think I was about 12 or 13 years old, and the remoteness of the location added to my fright. Plus, I was around the same location that King was writing about. That certainly added to the creep factor! I don't remember how old I was when I read The Shining but it was vivid for me. When the movie came out I was equally scared. Maybe that's why I have yet to read Doctor Sleep. And I read It when I was living in Ireland. It was right around Halloween and I remember how freaked out I was by the clown, Pennywise.

I read IT while I was in nursing school. I was at the hospital one day getting my patient assignment and while walking to my car later I heard the big flip-flop of footsteps behind me....when I turned to look, it was a clown. I ran like crazy all the way to my car and locked myself inside. Scared me to death!!!

I will never get over IT. I was so frightened by that book, I could only read it in public. I made myself watch the MFTV movie, which had a rather cheesey ending, and that at least enabled me to be able to look at clowns.

Dr. Sleep is a very good book and worth reading, especially if you liked The Shining.
