Today I was talking with my students about Manifest Destiny and the four main ways that the US acquired land during that period: through purchase, annexation, peaceful treaty, and treaty to end a war. We defined Manifest Destiny and connected it to The Second Great Awakening and the desire for more land being part of God's plan for the US. Then we got talking about whether the US gained land fairly through Manifest Destiny or not. They have to make an argument about it and write a paper.
They were engaged and excited about our discussion. Those that had done their reading assignment knew a lot about it, too!
