I watched the new version of Steel Magnolias last night. It stands the test of time and the cast was fantastic. I love Queen Latifa.

I was afraid to watch this one because I didn't think it could possibly stack up. Now I'll give it a chance.

I hated the idea when I saw the preview for it, but I had to TiVo it just to find out.

I must say that I know the entire 1989 film verbatim, as it has (and will always be) one of my Top 10 favorite movies ever, so that's a pretty high standard to live up to.

So, here are my thoughts about the 2012 remake:

1. The cast, while great individually, seemed a little deflated as an ensemble.

2. I know it was probably cut for time & to fit within parameters as TV movie, but I felt like some key scenes were just MISSING, and that everything was just... Rushed.

3. A lot of the stuff between Ouiser & Clairee wasn't fleshed out enough to show how long they'd been friends, how deep their relationship was; it was almost perfunctory and did not feel very... real.

4. Annelle's story line was just skimmed over, almost like she was an afterthought.

So, unlike the original, which I have seen at least 3 times a year since 1990, I don't think I'll be watching this one again.

I agree. I LOVED the 1989 film. . . I'm nervous to see this one.

I never ever see an armadillo cake and not think of Shirley MacLaine

agree with leesepea...it wasn't horrible, just not as good as the original :-) And that's too bad! I WANTED to love it! Great cast.
