thinking and thinking and thinking...

So, even though I've taken today off I'm thinking about school stuff.
  1. My department chair is retiring this year.  He's my mentor and I consider him my work husband--we're that close.  I'm so sad and in denial about him leaving.
  2. Apparently, his position has been eliminated.  Of course I haven't processed this.  It means significant changes.
  3. It looks as though I am going to be tapped to tackle teaching the senior electives (psychology, sociology, and the AP Psychology classes).  I've taught Soc, but not Psych.
  4. If I'm tapped to teach these courses, I'll have to attend a summer institute to get my certification to teach the AP Psych class.  Holy moly, I haven't taken a psych class in 25+ years!  I've got some serious brushing up to do.
  5. And, that means a real change in my preps.
  6. I don't know what to think about all this.
  7. On one hand, it would be really cool to teach those classes and to have Seniors who are choosing to take the classes as opposed to teaching students who have to have the course.
  8. On the other hand, it would mean I don't teach the content I currently teach.  Which I am always renovating and rethinking how to teach.

Change is always uncomfortable, isn't it? I'm sorry you're losing your office husband. That blows. I don't think employers consider that how hard it is for those left behind.

For what it's worth, I have a friend who is also an educator and he is happier teaching older students who want to be there. He gets impatient with the younger ones.
