I can't do it. I can't finish it. There aren't many books that I put down but I just can't do it. I don't care about the characters, the plot has too many threads to follow, and I just don't care enough to wade through page-long descriptions. Now I need to stop feeling guilty for giving up.

I give you permission to let yourself off the hook. Every book is not for everyone. :)
We are so tracking! I just gave up on a book, too! Bringing Adam Home, about how the Adam Walsh's abduction and murder were finally solved. It's well written and important in that this case changed the nation's attitude toward and treatment of crimes against kids. But it was just too, too depressing so I put it away and, like you, I've been feeling guilty.
The cover is just lovely, but that won't resolve what's on the inside. Time is precious. If a book doesn't absorb you, there are others more deserving of your time.
