So, I didn't read the whole book. I don't like magical realism as a genre of writing. This book was a real struggle for me. There are parts that are so humorous but overall it's just too dense. I did check out the SparkNotes so I can follow the discussion.

I agree: I found it too dense & I don't like magical realism. I *want* to like Salman Rushdie's work, but have stopped feeling bad about my inability to do so.
