As much as I love Christmas, I can't believe I've never read A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens until this year! There's a darkness and a richness to this story and I'm so glad I've finally read it. The book is better than the movie.
I haven't read it in decades, but whenever I think of great writing, I still think of this book. Not only is the prose resonant, the plot is so universal and enduring!
Sometimes I think it suffers in comparison to A Tale of Two Cities because of the holiday theme and its smaller scope. (And cuz it's shorter.) You're a teacher! Maybe you can champion it and get those English teachers to include A Christmas Carol in their classes!
If I'm a classroom around December, it's ALWAYS part of my curriculum (my CHS kids start reading it this coming week). If I'm NOT in a classroom, I read it on my own. I adore it; always have, always will.
I think that Patrick Stewart NAILED this; a lot of that darkness and richness of which you speak is present in his glorious film (and even the opening scene of the movie, which isn't in the novel, really, really works).

It's a wonderful story about redemption. I try to read it every year. Glad you liked it!

I haven't read it in years. I think it's time to read it again. :)
