I keep reading because, dag namit, I will NOT be beaten by a book! After reading the first chapter (and only the first chapter) 6 times over 8 years, I finally managed to finish reading Dune. It took 6 months.
I used to stick with them because I can be very stubborn. But as my home becomes more and more and more cluttered, I banish the "bad" books to a donation bag for the library book sale. I simply don't have the room. The last book I gave up on was Murder at San Simeon. It's Patty Hearst's novelization of Thomas Ince's death on her grandfather's boat. I really wanted to like it but the dialog stopped me cold.
I'm with Miss Emily: 20-50 pages. I'm pretty ruthless. There's just not enough time to waste on stuff I'm not enjoying; grab another book and move on! :-)
And this is why 95% of my books are library books...
Depends on who recommended it. If that person has been right on the money before with me then I'll try to stick it out until the end. But most of the time I give it about 20 or so pages & then give it up. Although a few months ago I gave up after 5 pages. In 5 pages, I lost count of how many flash backs the main character had and what made me give up was when two other characters started having a flash back at the same time. No way I could keep up with all that. :P
I think it depends on whether I want to like it. If I like the author, or was really looking forward to reading it, I'll give it more time than if I was just curious or intrigued by the title/cover/description.

Life's too short and not every book is good. If it's not grabbing you pretty early on, chuck it.

I chuck it if I haven't gotten into it in about 50 pages or so.
