But I do want to ask my blogging friends and visitors: why is "guys" used all the time? I mean, I'm not a guy. Females are not guys.
This really annoys me. I am not a guy. I especially do not like hearing people on TV using it. It seems lazy. And it annoys me. Have I mentioned it annoys me?

I think the word "guys" has evolved to include a gender-free connotation. Sort of like "man", as in the "rise of man".
And then there's the awkwardness of changing it to "guys and girls" (some women will be offended by being called "girls"), the formality of "men and women" (which also leaves out the intersexed), or the rudeness of "people" (which sounds a bit too close to "you people").
Sometimes, when I'm trying to avoid the all-inclusive "guys", I end up using "kids". I'm pretty sure some folks don't like that, either...

Sam left out "guys and gals" and "Guys and Dolls." Given all the options available here so far, I'll settle for Dood. Wait--I'm not a dude either....!
I've been told, straight-up, that "folks" is patronizing. ...sigh...
OK, seriously, just don't call me "lady" as in "OK, ladies, here we go with the sit-ups..." Just, no.
I'd also add that I have a named that is easily mangled, so at this point I'm happy to be called anything EXCEPT "some word starting with the same letter as her first name" and complete destruction of the rest of my name!
P.S. I was also once told that we should NEVER call children "kids" because it equates them with goats.
Maybe we should just not talk to each other... heh, that sounds awesome to me today. I'm in a cranky frame of mind.
Can you imagine how it affects me when somebody calls us "Guys" :-)
I prefer "Ladies" or "Gals" but then some people do not like that either.
So do they really have to say Guys, Gals or Ladies" Why can they just say; "Are you ready to order?" or "Are you all ready to order?"
What's wrong with "Ok, everybody" ? That's what I say to my students. Sometimes I use "friend" too. "Hey, Friends, it's time for the daily map quiz."
Sorry. I've heard it my entire life from my mom and various others.
I'll try to respect you enough not to be lazy and refer to you as a "Guy"! I'll TRY to remember.
