comparison shopping

I'm thinking of getting a new mattress/box spring and tossing around a couple of ideas. So, if you've got some feedback for me pass it along.

What I want is something I do not have to flip or turn or anything like that. Considering a Tempur-Pedic or a Sleep Number but not for any particular reason other than I think they'd last. The coil spring thingy isn't so great for a big gal like myself.

I'ma fan of a medium firm. I'm always hot at night (not that kind of hot you perv!). I sleep by myself, often on my tummy but I tend to roll all over the place (because I like one foot out). I like a full-size, that's plenty big enough for me.

And, would rather not spend an arm & a leg.

Suggestions??

I don't have any suggestions, but I am in the market for a new one too. The last time I bought one (about 3 years ago) I was told that the new pillow tops (medium-firm for me too) do not need to be turned. Mine is still quite comfy, I'm just looking for a king-size now. Hope that helps!

I'm a fan of the memory foam mattress. We have one and I have a memory foam pillow.

A little pricey, but so worth it!

Sweet dreams.

Neat... I'm a one foot out gal, too!

If you go with the temper-pedic buy one of the better options. The cheapest mattress they offer does not breath well and will be hot. However, the newer (ie. more expensive) mattresses are made to increase air flow and thus are cooler. I have neither the sleep number or the t-p. So, all I can say is, buy from a place with a good return/exchange policy so you can exchange if needed. Some people love one type and hate the other. Others feel the opposite. Good luck

Avoid the Select Comfort Sleep Number bed. Ours caused more pain than before we had it and it gave me bursitis in one shoulder, plus it has health problems.

We had the classic model without the added foam topper and bought a memory foam mattress topper to make it somewhat bearable. Its really a glorified air bed that still gives you a hammock affect like water beds. The only thing that makes them comfortable is the foam padding, so you're better off skipping the air and going right to foam.

Additionally, the Sleep Number bed has health hazards. After six years, a chamber popped. That's when we found the air chambers wet and moldy. My husband is allergic to mold and had been awakening with migraines each morning when they used to be less frequent.

About this time (1+/- yr ago), Select Comfort had a pending class action law suit against them for mold in beds (never heard what happened with that), and had been telling customers mold in beds was normal and to scrub the air chambers with bleach. When they told me this too, I rebutted. Mold in beds is abnormal and unhealthy and I should not have to scrub my bed.

I demanded a refund and that they pay for the return shipping. Reluctant, they agreed.

We took our foam mattress topper and put it on the floor. Immediately, it was more comfortable than the bed. We now have an inner spring mattress and couldn't be happier.

I'm doing a series on my blog about our experience with the Sleep Number bed. You can visit to read the full pros and cons from our experience.
