arts meme

Swiped from A Tense Teacher:

1. Name a book that you want to share so much that you keep giving away copies:
The first book that pops into mind is A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. Others include: The Alchemist by Paul Coelho, The Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffenegger and The Snowman by Raymond Briggs

2. Name a piece of music that changed the way you listen to music:
Canon In D by Pachelbel is a song played at my mother's funeral. It is the only thing I remember of that day thirty-five years ago. The song haunts me and moves me.

3. Name a film you can watch again and again without fatigue:
Miracle on 34th Street (the original & the remake)

4. Name a performer for whom you suspend all disbelief:
Glenn Close--she is mesmerizing!

5. Name a work of art that intrigues you:
Monet's "Rouen Cathedral" series moved me to tears. Standing in the middle of the museum I had silent tears streaming down my face. I was also emotionally stirred at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam (the only thing about that city I liked).

6. Name a work of fiction that has penetrated your real life:
Crime & Punishment by Fyodor Dostoyevsky--not so much for the story itself but for the whole experience of the book. There are moments so clearly remembered, words and phrases--whole concepts. This was required reading for my senior honor's English class in high school. I was the only student who not only read the whole thing but loved it and "got it". Even my teacher didn't seem to react the way I did to it. It was one of the first times I wondered if I was smarter than my teacher. I would, unfortunately and unintentionally, ask questions she wasn't able to answer. Another favorite was Kafka's Metamorphosis, and reading Sartre's The Wall in French was trippy.

7. Name a poem that you love to read: I am especially fond of e.e. cummings and Robert Frost.

i carry your heart with me(i carry it in
my heart)i am never without it(anywhere
i go you go,my dear; and whatever is done
by only me is your doing,my darling)
i fear
no fate(for you are my fate,my sweet)i want
no world(for beautiful you are my world,my true)
and it's you are whatever a moon has always meant
and whatever a sun will always sing is you
here is the deepest secret nobody knows
(here is the root of the root and the bud of the bud
and the sky of the sky of a tree called life;which grows
higher than the soul can hope or mind can hide)
and this is the wonder that's keeping the stars apart
i carry your heart(i carry it in my heart)

~e.e. cummings
