don't know much about history

So, here it is Wednesday--midway through the week. What with the full moon, the kids are bouncing off the walls. And I don't have anything particular to say today. No random thoughts that need expressing.

Maybe just one little rant, though, before I head to sleep: I am stunned that the students at my school have no interest in historical or current events. They have no background in the basics of history--have no chronology, no sense of time or place.

I don't know where this lack of interest comes from. I don't know how to engage them as learners... heck, how to engage them as citizens. I wonder what the future holds if teens world-wide are as apathetic and uninterested as the teens I see every day.

I mean, I can only make things "so" interesting. And some things are just dreadfully boring. How does one jazz up the Constitution? I am trying as hard as I can.

No one knew who Gerald Ford was or why his death was "such a big deal." They actually thought he was "you know, the car guy," having confused him with Henry Ford. No one was interested in the hanging of Saddam Hussein, other than the thrill of watching the video on the internet. No interest in the legal process, no interest in a discussion of the death penalty or different types of execution. No interest.

So, I guess I'm glad it is Wednesday. Just a couple of days left this week. A couple of days of bashing my head into the chalk board before the weekend comes.

what if this is as good as it gets?
