• Question: We all had to read things in school that we didn’t like … but what about something you read for a class that you ended up liking (or loving)? An author you discovered that you might not have found? A genre you hadn’t thought about? {source}
What stands out most is my love for Crime and Punishment by Fyodor Dostoevsky. I was the only person in my senior English class that got it or liked it. Which led me on the path to other great Russian writers. Another story I was totally into was Satre's The Wall, which my advanced French class read in French. Existentialism was a genre I didn't know anything about and one I still relate to. Oh, and that reminds me of Kafka's masterpiece The Metamorphosis.
I didn't enjoy The Pearl or any Thomas Hardy. I wasn't ready for Dickens then, either, as an adult I adore Dickens.

If there's a gap in my reading history it's definitely the classics--especially those by non-American authors. In HS I can only remember reading a few American classics, and I tested out of all of the basic literature courses in college--which seemed like a great deal at the time, but looking back I'm not so sure. I tried to get through Crime & Punishment on my own back in my twenties but just couldn't do it. I admire you for your enjoyment of those kinds of books!
