musing mondays

• Question: I’ve asked before how you feel about lending your books. I’ve asked how you feel about libraries. But—how do you feel about borrowing books from friends? Is this something you like to do? Does it make you feel uncomfortable or rushed while reading? Does it affect how you feel about the book you’re reading, pressured into liking it? {source}

Because of my Nook, I very rarely borrow books anymore. But I generally felt rushed to finish and return. Depending on where I got the book I would sometimes feel bad if I didn't love the book the way the lender did. Some of my friends are like me--lending it with the idea of no rush to return it, but I still feel rushed.

I agree with you. I feel rushed to finish too if a friend lends a book. And there is serious pressure to like it since they are lending it because they enjoyed it so much!

Interesting MM!

Yes, I feel rushed when I borrow books, too

I seldom borrow or lend...for the reasons you mentioned.

I do have a stack of books from a friend who lives five hours away...and she has some of mine. I don't even remember which ones! I never lend books unless I've already read them.

Borrowing and lending books can be a tricky business! I don't offer to lend books anymore, but if someone asks to borrow a book I'll do it. And I don't usually ask to borrow books from others anymore either, mostly for the reasons you mention. If I want to read something a friend has told me about, I'll just get it from the library rather than borrow from the friend--less pressure that way! :-)

I generally only borrow from one particular bookish friend because of these issues. The one I continue to lend to and borrow from is ok with me keeping the book for a while and there is no issue if I say it is not for me - this happens rarely on both parts but sometimes a book I think she'll love she doesn't...

I am neither a lender or a borrower. It just seems like too much trouble.

I don't borrow books from anywhere other than the library, so I wouldn't know the feeling, but it is something to think about. :D

I only borrow things from my Mom. In fact, I still have to return a book and replace the electric kettle I borrowed and gave away.
